Now watch an uninterrupted video entertainment with Satellite ...

Though cable television is the most common form of connection in many households, but the satellite connection for video communication is growing at a rapid pace which has made a huge impact with cable connection. The installation of a cable connection does not require a lot of equipments and accessories. All it requires is one receiver for digital programming for a television. This connection that is usually done with the help of cables is required to be returned to the necessary cable providers once the connection is terminated. But a satellite connection requires quite a few accessories and equipments. First and foremost is the satellite dish that receives the signals for telecasting. It might be a single dish or a set of dishes. These have to be placed outside and in clear view of the sky to receive the necessary signals. There are a Satellite TV Providers who provide the necessary equipments apart from the satellite dish.

Most satellite dishes come with Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) that are required for clear and crystallized viewing.

Satellite television communication has an impeccable audio quality and picture display. This is mainly because television with satellite connection can transmit digital data with the help of MPEG 2 or 4 compressions. Theses compressions especially the MPEG 4 is capable of providing a high defined video on various appliances like computers, cell phones, etc apart from televisions. Now, users can have access to any television channels that they like instead of sticking to the standard set of channels that were provided previously. The satellite providers can provide national channels like HBO, ESPN and other popular national channels and also local channels like ABC, FOX and other channels that are popular in a particular area.

Since the signals are sent and received through a satellite, it has become easier to subscribe for channels that are available in other countries.

So, there are no channel restrictions as it happens with cable networks. Also, the choice of channels and even particular programs are feasible with satellite connection. There are also packages available according to the interest of audience. For example, there are packages available for sports channels, travel channels, etc. So, if the user is a sports fan or someone who enjoys travelling then choosing these packages brings down the cost which is not the case when these channels are subscribed separately. The channel packages provided by various providers? cuts down costs for television entertainment, which cannot be done when subscribed individually. There are also options available with certain providers to unsubscribe channels that they don?t watch at regular basis and subscribe just for those that they watch.

Satellite connection also has a wider geographical coverage than cable connections. They can even reach areas that cannot be possible by cable operators as signals are transmitted through satellite rather than through cable. Another huge benefit with satellite connection is that internet data can also be transmitted through satellite connection. So, now with satellite connection the two in one option is available as the internet service can be received through satellite. That is, both video entertainment and internet can be viewed through a television. Now, users can ask their Satellite Providers to provide internet access through their television and it can be done at no time at all and at a reasonable price.

Though satellite connection requires lot more equipments than the cable connections, they have some unique advantages and features that compensates for it. Some of the features available through a satellite connection are not possible with any other connection. Channels can also be subscribed according to the interests of the user rather than opting for the standard channels that come with the other connections.

'Lab rat' of botany gets technicolour makeover

Andy Coghlan, reporter

C0073345.jpg(Image: Heiti Paves/Science Photo Library)

THESE ethereal forms are no exotic marine creatures - they are botany's answer to the lab rat.

Since 2000, when it became the first plant to have its genome fully sequenced, Arabidopsis thaliana, also known as thale cress, has been the focus of hundreds of investigations into gene function. Here, the deep red body of the cress is the carpel, the female sexual organ. Although the redness results from a dye, the glow from the whole image comes from natural fluorescent radiation by plant cell walls. The mass of straggly yellow "dreadlocks" is the stigma, the organ that admits pollen to fertilise the plant, and the green lobes to either side are petals. The green blobs visible on the carpel and petals are pollen grains that have recently tumbled down.

"There are some very beautiful things in flowers that you don't normally see because they're so small, so I try to bring these out," says Heiti Paves of Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia. He took the shots using a confocal laser scanning microscope. In real life, the cress is about 10 to 20 centimetres tall. "All this was made just for fun using plants and materials left over from experiments," adds Paves, who has won awards for his magnified shots of thale cress.

As a botanist, Paves is interested in the plant's scientific value as much as its beauty. He and his colleagues are trying to discover why plants have myosins. In animals, these proteins are vital for the functioning of muscles. But plants don't have muscles. "We don't know yet what they're for," he says, adding that nothing happens to Arabidopsis if any of its 17 myosin genes are individually switched off. "We see some differences in double and triple mutants, with two to three myosin genes knocked out, but it's still too early to establish the functions of myosin in plant cells," he says.

Fittingly, the DNA, which sits in each cell nucleus and is the subject of Paves's research, is visible as the blue specks that pervade the picture. It has been stained with a special light-blue dye.

LONDON (AP) ? How many ways can you stretch Britain's red, white and blue Union Jack over finely toned Olympic athletes?

Ask Stella McCartney.

The famed designer unveiled her ideas for Britain's Olympians on Thursday with uniforms that made imaginative use of the familiar flag. The designs, a closely guarded secret for months, were shown at the Tower of London in a gala event that combined fashion's razzle-dazzle with the star quality of top Olympic competitors.

Out with rail-thin fashion models, in with real Olympic stars.

McCartney, who is serving as adidas' creative director for the Summer Games, said she hoped both competitors and the British public like the uniforms and are proud of the athletes who will wear them at the Olympics and the Paralympics.

"The basic message is to unify the team," McCartney told The Associated Press backstage after the show. "The athletes all want to feel like one team. The other big starting point for me was the Union flag, an iconic flag, I think every Briton is so proud of it, but I wanted to look at it in a different way."

McCartney said instead of simply using the flag in its traditional form she broke it up and used various elements in an original way.

"I wanted to make it slightly more delicate and feminine, while still keeping the masculinity in some ways," she said.

Britain isn't the only team that has pressed a top designer into duty ? Ralph Lauren is working on some outfits for the U.S. team, and Giorgio Armani is lending his skills to the Italian Olympians.

One challenge for McCartney was to incorporate the latest technological improvements and fabric developments into the designs without sacrificing her aesthetic goals.

"My first question for the athletes was, 'What can I do for you?'" she said. "This isn't about me, it's about Team Great Britain. They all said 'we need the technology.'"

That mean some of the artistic imagery had to be toned down.

"There are seams you can't mess up, there's tons of things, home and away kits, in gymnastics you have to have symmetry or you're marked down," McCartney said. "But it's been an incredible journey."

Triple jumper Phillips Idowu said it felt great to don the new uniform.

"All eyes will be watching London 2012 so every little detail matters," he said. "I love what Stella has done with the design."

He said the handsome designs and modern technology will provide a competitive boost.

"Looking good is psychologically important but my sprint suit is also technically advanced, so not only do I look good but I also have confidence in the technology."

The clothing included competition uniforms, training wear, a presentation suit, footwear and accessories.

British athletes who modeled the new gear included heptathlete Jessica Ennis, rowing champion Pete Reed and double Paralympic swimming gold medallist Ellie Simmonds.

Facebook's effects in a world of political turmoil

Facebook has the power of a nation state, but is it living up to its moral responsibilities, asks a former CNN bureau chief Rebecca MacKinnon

You have referred to Mark Zuckerberg as the Sultan of Facebookistan. What did you mean?
Sovereignty and power are shifting. Before the internet, these notions were controlled by nation states. But companies like Facebook are the sovereigns of cyberspace. Facebook exercises power by shaping the way you interact with the world. It makes decisions about what you can do and not do on its network. And there are only a few countries in the world where Facebook is not the most popular social network.

Is this really a problem? Isn't Facebook just a neat way to keep up to date with friends?
That's not how the activists who brought down the Egyptian regime saw it. Facebook was a useful tool for galvanising anger against the regime. But in November 2010, on the eve of a demonstration, one of their key pages was removed. Why? Because the page's administrators were using a pseudonym, which is against Facebook's terms of service. Fortunately they managed to get the page transferred to a US-based activist willing to use her real name. But that was lucky. The bigger problem is that Facebook and other global networks are setting rules that are ultimately based on commercial considerations, not on the rights and civil liberties of users.

Yet people are free to leave if they don't like the rules that Facebook sets.
A lot of people are on Facebook even though they are uncomfortable with its practices and policies. I have spoken with activists from authoritarian countries who say that Facebook's habit of making changes to privacy settings endangers people. Iranian activists, for example, felt particularly exposed by a rule change the network made in 2009, when it suddenly made public the list of friends that each user has. Even so, many feel they have to be on Facebook. If you're an activist you have to be where the people are.

Do you think Facebook appreciates its power?
Mark Zuckerberg has an ideology that's very clear. He believes the world should be open and transparent, and that what you do on the internet should be clearly linked to your physical identity - if you aren't open about who you are and what you are doing, you lack integrity. Tell that to activists in Egypt and Iran, or to women fleeing an abusive spouse. The rules of Facebook are based on how Zuckerberg thinks society should be, not how it is.

What would you like to say to Zuckerberg?
I'd ask him to have Facebook join the Global Network Initiative. Companies who join commit to a core set of human rights principles and work with the human rights community to figure out how to conduct business in a way that is consistent with privacy and freedom of expression, and how not to become unwitting or witting parties of government oppression. Wacom Intuos5 touch review

It's no secret Wacom has a firm grasp on what it takes to make great graphic input devices. Fresh off of its introduction of the Inkling last Fall, the outfit recently unveiled the latest member of its high-end pen tablet line, the Intous5 touch. Essentially, Wacom took what made the Intuos4 a great addition to any designer or illustrator's workflow and refined it, with this latest iteration sporting a new rubber-coated shell. It also implements touch gestures -- much like those on the fresh Bamboo models -- which can be customized to speed up tasks you need to be complete on the regular, preferably without the aid of a mouse.

Sure, a new matte black suit and the ability to navigate Adobe Creative Suite without a pen seem impressive at first glance, but is the new model worth investing northward of $229? Are you better off sticking with the Intuos4 you splurged on a while back? Let's see.

Looking at quantum gravity in a mirror

Einstein's theory of gravity and quantum physics are expected to merge at the Planck-scale of extremely high energies and on very short distances. At this scale, new phenomena could arise. However, the Planck-scale is so remote from current experimental capabilities that tests of quantum gravity are widely believed to be nearly impossible. Now an international collaboration between the groups of Caslav Brukner and Markus Aspelmeyer at the University of Vienna and Myungshik Kim at Imperial College London has proposed a new quantum experiment using Planck-mass mirrors. Such an experiment could test certain predictions made by quantum gravity proposals in the laboratory. The findings will be published this week in Nature Physics.

A long-standing challenge

The search for a theory that unifies quantum mechanics with Einstein's theory of gravity is one of the main challenges in modern physics. Quantum mechanics describes effects at the scale of single particles, atoms and molecules. Einstein's theory of gravity, on the other hand, is typically relevant for large masses. It is widely expected that phenomena stemming from a unified theory of quantum gravity will become evident only at the so-called Planck-scale of extremely high energies or extremely small distances. The Planck-length is 1.6 x 10-35 meters: This is so small that if one were to take this scale to be 1 meter, then an atom would be as large as the entire visible Universe! Similarly, the Planck-energy is so large that even the Large Hadron Collider in CERN only reaches an insignificantly tiny fraction of this energy, and a particle accelerator would need to be of astronomical size to get even close to the Planck-Energy. This scale is also described by the Planck-mass: A piece of dust weights about that much, which is truly heavy compared to single atoms, and quantum phenomena are typically considered unobservable for such masses. The Planck-scale is therefore so remote from current experimental capabilities that tests of quantum gravity proposals are widely believed to be nearly impossible. However, physicists have now found a way to probe some predictions of quantum gravity proposals in the laboratory by looking at quantum effects in Planck-mass quantum systems.

The sequence makes the difference

In quantum mechanics it is impossible to know where a particle is and how fast it is moving at the same time. Nevertheless, it is possible to make two subsequent measurements: a measurement of the particle's position followed by a measurement of its momentum, or vice-versa. In quantum physics the two different measurement sequences produces different experimental results. According to many theories of quantum gravity, this difference would be altered depending on the mass of the system, since the Planck-length puts a fundamental limit on measurements of distances. The team of physicists have now shown that although such modifications would be very small, they could be verified by using very massive quantum systems in the laboratory. Such an experiment could therefore test some of the proposals for quantum gravity.

Probing new theories with moving mirrors

The main idea is to use a laser pulse to interact four times with a moving mirror to probe exactly the difference between measuring first position after measuring momentum as compared to measuring momentum after measuring the position. By timing and engineering the interactions very precisely, the team have shown it is possible to map the effect onto the laser pulse and to read it out with quantum optical techniques. "Any deviation from the expected quantum mechanical result would be very exciting", says Igor Pikovski, the lead author of the work, "but even if no deviation is observed, the results can still help in the search for possible new theories". Some theoretical approaches to quantum gravity indeed predict different outcomes for the experiment. The scientists thus show how to probe these yet unexplored theories in a laboratory without using high-energy particle accelerators and without relying on rare astrophysical events.

Alcoholics With Drinking Difficulties ? Signs, Symptoms, And Detox ...

What can help me to reduce or quit alcohol consumption?

No one can make you quit or reduce drinking. You have to be devoted and determined to do it yourself. However, it could be difficult, and one or more of the following might help.

Realising the difficulty

Many people refuse to themselves that they?ve a problem. The type of thoughts that many people deceive themselves with include: ?I can cope?, ?I?m just drinking what my mates drink?, ?I can quit at any time?. Realising that you may have an issue, and seeking help where necessary, are sometimes the greatest steps to decreasing alcohol, or cutting it out entirely. Self help

Many people are assisted by books, sites, leaflets and their own willpower. It is thought that about 1 in 3 people who?ve an issue with alcohol return to reasonable drinking, or stop drinking, without any specialist. See the end of this leaflet for a list of resources. Talking treatments

A lot of people are aided by guidance and suggestions from a practice nurse or doctor. Sometimes a recommendation to a specially qualified counsellor may be suggested. They may aid you to talk through the problems in more detail and aid you to plan how to manage your drinking. Often, more extensive talking treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, or motivational enhanced therapy may be appropriate. For instance, CBT enables you to change certain ways that you think, feel and behave, and could aid some people with alcohol issues.

Talking treatments are specifically useful for children with alcohol-related problems who?re aged between 10 and 17. Children can also be offered family therapy in which other members of their family might be involved in a treatment course. Treating other illnesses

Alcohol may seem to be a fast answer to the relief of stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. However, the effect is short-lived and drinking lots of alcohol sometimes makes these conditions even worse. If you think that these conditions are the main problem then see your doctor. Medicine and talking treatments such as CBT typically work well for these conditions, and are a much better long term option than heavy drinking. Detoxification (detox)

This is an option if you are alcohol dependent. What?s detoxification?

Detoxification, or detox, involves taking a short course of a medicine that assists to prevent withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking alcohol. Benzodiazepine medicines such as chlordiazepoxide or diazepam are used for detoxification.

Lots of GPs are happy to prescribe for detox from alcohol. A standard plan is to prescribe a high dose of medicine for the 1st day that you quit alcohol consumption. You then steadily reduce the dose over the next 5-7 days. This usually prevents, or greatly reduces, the withdrawal signs and symptoms. You must agree not to drink any alcohol when you?re taking the detox medication. Your GP or practice nurse will often see you regularly during the time of detox. Additionally, during this period, support from family or friends could be of great help.

Seven Tips For New Homebuyers | Keystone Homes | Atlanta Real ...

tips for buying a new homesIf you?re ready to buy a new home, figuring out where to start can be overwhelming. With so many things to keep track of, Keystone Homes is here to offer some advice. We have new homes in Augusta, Ga., that are affordable and perfect for first-time buyers. Here are seven tips to help you along the way:

Lifestyle - Choosing the right community is essential. Do you prefer a suburban neighborhood with a big play area for children? Or are you more interested in a small yard that?s easy to maintain? Inquire about amenities and ask local residents about the neighborhood. If you?re planning on having a family, be sure that the home you choose is spacious and that it can be expanded if necessary.

Homeownership costs
? When deciding how much you can afford, remember to account for more than just the monthly mortgage payment. Utilities, property taxes, homeowner association fees, repairs, and lawn maintenance are some of the fees that can add up quickly. Having an estimate of costs beforehand can help you narrow down your home choices.

New vs. Existing ? While many of the existing homes on the market may be cheaper, a new custom-built home could end up saving you money in the long run. Our homes have energy saving features that lower utility costs. Plus, an older home typically requires more maintenance, and repairs can be costly to fix.

Location ? Another thing to be wary of is a neighborhood on the decline. If pricing seems too good to be true, it may be due to falling home values. Check out the area you?re interested in and inquire with local residents about recent developments. Don?t get stuck in an unfinished community with few completed homes.

Evaluate builders ? While you?re investigating communities, be sure and do your homework on the builders as well. Choosing a reputable company will save you time, money and headaches. Talk to other homeowners about their experiences with a builder.

Mortgage ? Before you sign anything, read all the fine print. Even in today?s market, low interest rates may be tied to? unfavorable terms. PMI (private mortgage insurance), points and closing costs can drive your total mortgage cost up. If you aren?t comfortable with the terms presented to you, don?t be afraid to shop around for the best loan.

Documents ? The homebuying process can be a whirlwind of unfamiliar terminology and documents. One of the best ways to protect yourself is to get every part of the sale in writing. Study up on real estate terminology before house hunting, so you understand what?s going on before making a commitment, and don?t be afraid to ask questions.

When you decide to purchase a new home, it?s important to have a builder you can trust. If you?re searching for homes in Augusta, Ga., or Aiken, S.C., consider Keystone Homes. We?ll work with you to make your experience as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Partnering with Keystone means working with someone who has the knowledge and insight to make your new home dreams a reality. ?Talk to Greg? Comes to Portland Neighborhood Minus The Mayor

by Phillip M. Bailey on March 12, 2012

The next ?Talk to Greg? session with Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is scheduled for Monday in the Portland neighborhood, but the mayor won?t be in attendance.

The event will be held at Portland Elementary School, 3410 Northwestern Parkway at 6 p.m. to give residents an opportunity to bring their concerns and suggestions directly to Metro Government officials. Initially, the mayor?s office would not comment on the reason for the mayor?s absence, however, later confirmed in an interview that Fischer will be out of town on vacation.

The mayor?s chief of staff, Ellen Hesen, will host the meeting in his absence along with his chief of community building and chief administrative officer.

?All the mayor?s leadership will be there. The mayor is taking a very much needed and very much deserved vacation with his family. So he will not be there, however, all his top leadership will be there and there will be plenty of people there for the citizens to interact with,? says mayoral spokesman Chris Poynter.

Councilwoman Cheri Bryant-Hamilton, D-5, represents the area. She regrets the mayor won?t be there, but says constituents will likely address the Northwestern Parkway livability plan and vacant properties in the district.

?Mayor Fischer had a scheduling conflict and won?t be there, but we do know that he?s always open to coming to Portland, District 5 and the West End. We?ll know that we will have another opportunity to talk directly with him. The mayor?s working hard on behalf of the city,? she says. ?The city is always on his mind no matter where he is.?

(AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum on Sunday nudged rival Newt Gingrich to step aside, arguing a head-to-head contest between himself and Mitt Romney should "occur sooner rather than later." A defiant Gingrich predicted victories in Tuesday's primaries in Alabama and Mississippi and called Romney the weakest GOP front-runner in nearly a century.

Santorum and Gingrich were campaigning hard two days before what has become a potentially decisive Southern showdown for the Republican contenders battling to challenge President Barack Obama in the fall.

Losing Alabama and Mississippi would effectively spell the end for Gingrich, who has banked his waning prospects on an all-Southern strategy. The former House speaker's lone primary wins have been in South Carolina and Georgia, a state he represented in Congress for 20 years.

A win for Romney in Alabama, where polling shows a tight contest between Romney, Gingrich and Santorum, could all but bring the GOP nominating contest to a close.

The former Massachusetts governor has built a substantial delegate lead against his rivals but has failed so far to win a state in the deep South, home to the Republican Party's most dedicated base voters. An Alabama victory would provide a key breakthrough for Romney among the socially conservative and evangelical voters who have thus far proven resistant to his candidacy.

Santorum, who has battled to be Romney's chief conservative foe, burnished his standing with a decisive win in Saturday's caucuses in Kansas. The former Pennsylvania senator also carried contests last week in Oklahoma and Tennessee, giving him a toehold in the South.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Santorum said Gingrich's recent stretch of weak showings suggests he has few options left in the race. Gingrich placed third in Kansas and dead last in Wyoming, whose caucuses Romney won easily Saturday.

"The speaker can stay in as long as he wants, but I think the better opportunity to make sure that we nominate a conservative is to give us an opportunity to go head-to-head with Gov. Romney at some point and hopefully that will occur sooner rather than later," Santorum said, adding he wasn't directly asking Gingrich to get out.

Santorum attended Baptist church services in Tupelo, Miss., Sunday morning and had campaign stops scheduled in Meridian and Gulfport later in the day. Gingrich was also campaigning in Mississippi, where he attended church services at the First Baptist Church of Brandon and later headlined a rally there.

During church services, Gingrich stepped forward at the invitation of Pastor Scott Thomas to describe his religious evolution.

Gingrich, who recently converted to Catholicism, never mentioned his new faith but touched on his well-publicized, messy marital history.

"There are periods of my life in which I have sinned," Gingrich said. "I have been very, very fortunate that I have a very, very close relationship with Callista. ... I had to earn being a 68-year-old grandfather by living through things that I would never want my grandchildren to repeat."

Gingrich has been married three times. He had an extramarital relationship with Callista, his current wife, for six years while married to his second wife.

On "Fox News Sunday," Gingrich compared Romney to Leonard Wood, a U.S. Army general from New Hampshire who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920 but lost on the tenth ballot to Warren Harding.

"He's not a very strong front-runner," Gingrich said of Romney. "Almost all conservatives are opposed, which is the base of the party. And I think we are likely to see after the last primary in June, we're likely to see a 60-day conversation about what's going to happen." In August Republicans head to their national convention in Tampa, Fla.

Gingrich also took aim at Santorum, saying his support for earmarks and other spending projects while in Congress had alienated voters from the Republican party in 2006. Republicans lost both the House and Senate that year, and Santorum lost re-election to the Senate by an 18-point margin.

"This is somebody who on a number of occasions had Washington change him ? he admits it and he says it's a team sport. You had to go along to get along," Gingrich said of Santorum.

Romney had no campaign appearances Sunday but was scheduled to attend an event Monday night in Alabama.

Meanwhile, this campaign and an allied independent group were far outpacing his rivals on the air.

Restore Our Future, a super PAC run by former Romney advisers, was spending $1.42 million on ads in Alabama and $973,000 in Mississippi. The Romney campaign boosted its television ad spending from $165,000 to $233,000 in Alabama.

Gingrich and Santorum were also benefiting from air support from well-heeled outside groups.

The Gingrich campaign was running about $125,000 in ads in Alabama and $83,000 in Mississippi, while the pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future was spending $413,000 on ads in Alabama and $250,000 in Mississippi.

Santorum had only a nominal presence on the air in both states. But the Red White and Blue fund, his allied super PAC, was spending $275,000 on ads in Alabama and $235,000 in Mississippi.

Wins in the U.S. territories Guam, the Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands along with Wyoming helped Romney significantly pad his delegate lead in the race. The Associated Press calculates that Romney now has 454 delegates compared with 217 for Santorum, 107 for Gingrich and 47 for Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

A candidate must win 1,144 delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination at the national convention.

Is It A Good Idea To Acquire Gold, Silver And Other Precious Metals ...

by Gregory Bryant

Precious metals, for example silver and gold, are a bunch of metals with good monetary value. Because the value of gold keeps rising, more and more people are considering assets like silver and gold being a wonderful way to invest. Palladium, platinum, silver and gold are smart investment opportunities while in economical hardships. Looking back through the past reveals that when share values slide, the prices of silver and gold often climb.

You?ll find several kinds of precious metals. Many people are informed about bars and coin, but there are additional methods to have these metals help your portfolio. Having shares in precious metals mining organizations are a good way to venture. A different selection is certain funds which only invest in silver and gold. Yet another choice is jewelry made of these elements. You will discover good and not so good points to investing in each form of metal.

Gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion or bars tend to be pretty hefty. Storage is amongst the principal difficulties with this kind of asset. Typically you have to pay for safe-keeping. Precious metal coins are much more compact. A lot of investors keep them in home based safes or in safety deposit boxes at banks. A more convenient option is to get your own broker or dealer hold them in the company vault. With stocks and mutual funds safe-keeping isn?t a worry. The records of the purchase of the gold and silver shows proof of possession.

For those who are looking to obtain coins, bars or bullion, there are several metal retailers around the globe. A number of corporations even promote precious metals on the internet. With just about any supplier you should get a respected one with a great standing. Check out the Better Business Bureau for any firm you are thinking about. Also there is a great deal of information online and in books that suggest vendors that have a long history in the industry.

For people who would like to invest in mining options and stocks, you need to find a broker. There are numerous listings of the top rated brokers provided by well recognized fiscal journals. A sensible way to go about this intelligently is always to become knowledgeable simply by perusing posts and publications. Investing in palladium, platinum, silver or gold can be a very good decision under the appropriate financial situation.

Alien invasion a threat to Antarctic ecosystem

In the pristine frozen continent of Antarctica scientists fear an alien invasion -- not from outer space, but carried in people's pockets and bags.

Seeds and plants accidentally brought to Antarctica by tourists and scientists may introduce alien plant species which could threaten the survival of native plants in the finely balanced ecosystem.

Invasive alien plants are amongst the most significant conservation threat to Antarctica, especially as climate change warms the ice continent, said a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Journal published on Tuesday.

More than 33,000 tourists and 7,000 scientists visit Antarctica each year by ship and aircraft, and a two month survey of visitors has found that many are carrying plant seeds picked up from other countries they have already visited.

The study vacuumed travelers' pockets, trouser and sleeve cuffs, shoes and inside their bags, and used tweezers to pry out accidentally hidden seeds. On average each person checked had just 9.5 seeds in clothing and equipment.

"The people that were carrying the most had lots and lots of seeds. They really were substantial threats," said Dana Bergstrom, from the Australian Antarctic Division.

"When we take things in through hitchhiking then we get species which are competitive. The plants and animals there are not necessarily competitive, so there's a good chance... we'd start losing various precious biodiversity on the (Antarctic) continent," Bergstrom told Reuters.

Amongst the alien species discovered were the Iceland Poppy, Tall Fescue Velvet grass and Annual Winter Grass ? all from cold climates and capable of growing in Antarctica.

Rapidly warming peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula, where most tourists travel, is now considered a "hot spot" on the frozen continent and the warmer the climate, the easier for seeds to propagate.

Warming oceans could melt ice faster than expected

"The peninsula is warming at some of the greatest rates on the planet," said Bergstrom.

The study, the first continent-wide assessment of invasive species in Antarctica, surveyed about 1,000 passengers during 2007-2008, the first year of the International Polar Year, an international effort to research the polar regions.

It has taken almost three years to identify the seed species and their effects on the icy continent.

Bergstrom said the one alien seed that had gained a foothold is Annual Winter Grass. It is a substantial weed in the sub-Antarctic and is on the Antarctic island of King George. It has also made its way to the tail part of the Antarctic continent.

"That's just one example of the weeds we picked up and a population of it has just been found in the last couple of seasons," she said.

Annual Winter Grass grows very well in disturbed areas like seal and penguin areas, and could propagate amongst the slow growing mosses around those colonies.

"If it got into those areas in the peninsula it would have the potential to overrun things," Bergstrom said.
