Wray Herbert: Is Feeling Bad a Luxury Problem?

In Judith Viorst's classic children's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Alexander wakes up with chewing gum in his hair -- and everything goes downhill from there. He trips on his skateboard and drops his sweater in the sink. He doesn't get a window seat in the car, and the dentist tells him he has a cavity. His mother makes him get white sneakers instead of the blue-and-red-striped ones he covets. He's forced to eat lima beans for dinner, and there's kissing on TV. To top it all, his nightlight burns out just as he's getting ready for bed.

Alexander's plight resonates not just with kids but with any adult who has ever whined about a luxury problem. Alexander is clearly a very fortunate child. He has food on the dinner table every day, a warm bed for sleep, dental care, a sweater, and sneakers, not to mention real luxuries like a TV and a skateboard. So when we read about the spoiled child's tantrums, we can't help but be reminded that most of the stresses in our adult lives -- the congested commuter traffic, the workplace conflict, the leaky roof -- are also luxury problems.

Health experts call these "first-world problems," meaning the accumulated stresses of daily life and the negative emotions they arouse. There's little doubt that worry and anger and sadness are linked to illness and mortality, right down to the cellular level, but isn't this just the downside of privilege? Those of us who live in modern, industrialized nations may indeed be sickened by negative emotions, but surely this phenomenon is eclipsed by more pressing and serious health risks in the developing world, by "real" problems like famine, poverty, and war.

Or is it? The fact is, we don't know. The question never been studied. That's why University of Kansas psychological scientist Sarah Pressman and her colleagues decided to examine the emotion-health link in 142 countries across the planet, including many with persistent, daily risks to health and well-being, like prolonged civil war and drought. The scientists surveyed more than 150,000 people, ranging in age from 15 to 99, a representative sample of the world population participating in the Gallup World Poll. They queried these people about the specific negative emotions they had experienced the previous day -- worry, sadness, boredom, depression, and so forth -- and about positive emotions, including happiness, laughter, and love.

In addition to these data on everyday feelings, the scientists took various measures of health: Do you have any health problems that prevent regular activity? How well rested do you feel? Are you experiencing pain? They asked, in general, how satisfied or dissatisfied these people were with their health. They also asked about their basic needs -- for money, shelter, food, and water -- and about crime, safety, and sense of security.

Emotions matter to health -- everywhere. That's the main finding from this first-ever worldwide analysis. As reported in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science, both positive and negative emotions were uniquely linked to health, and unexpectedly, emotions were actually better predictors of health and illness than were basic unmet needs, for food, safety, and shelter. What's more, emotions are not a first-world problem; indeed, the opposite appears to be true. The poorer the country (as indicated by GDP), the stronger the connection between emotions and health. Positive emotions (or their scarcity) appear especially important to individual health status in poorer countries.

Alexander's solution for all his cares and woes is to move to Australia. In the Australian version of this popular book, the solution is to move to Timbuktu. But as this study documents, there's no place on Earth to outrun the cascade of human emotions -- or the important health consequences of those everyday feelings.

Searching for Hardwood Floor Contractors to Improve Your Home ...

The floor may help define the standard of your own home. It is the very first thing your friends and relatives will probably notice once they step into your house. It ought to appear clean for your eyes and really feel clean for your feet. The sort of material applied on your floor leaves a good or bad impression on your visitors. One of the most appealing types of flooring is hardwood. Look for well-performing hardwood floor contractors if you need to bring classiness in your property.

There are two kinds of hardwood floors: solid and engineered. Solid hardwood floors give off a natural vibe into the house. It could range in dimension and style while some might include other functions just like immunity from humidity. Engineered hardwood, conversely, has 2 or more levels. Additionally it is the most widely used flooring worldwide. Many people mix up engineered hardwood with laminates and vinyl. Both kinds just make your floor appear as if they're genuine wood. Discuss the type of flooring you would like for your home with your hardwood floor contractors.

Floors deteriorates with time. Experts normally make use of special surface finishes to keep the floor from looking dull over time. Building contractors don't just set up flooring systems; they must make sure it seems polished and spot-free. In some cases, the floor may end up uneven after installation. To correct this, hardwood floor sanding is critical.

hardwood flooring sanding is the solution to smoothen the surface and get rid of unevenness. Experts use a sander machine for easy leveling and handheld sandpaper for edges and difficult to reach parts. This process also works well for removing paint stains or torn film on the surface of the floor. Sanding isn't easy and it demands good deal of attention if you need a perfectly smooth surface. Additionally you need to use different kinds of sand paper or devices on distinct areas. Apart from flooring, stair cases made out of hardwood steps also call for sanding and finishing.

When sanding hardwood floors, you initially need to remove or fasten lifted nails or screws. This prevents uneven smoothening and also eliminates damaging the sanding machine. There has to be good air flow inside the room as sawdust may possibly fill up the air. Building contractors need to use safety glasses and respiratory masks to protect themselves from toxic irritants. The floor must be free from dirt, hair, as well as other fine particles to have an easier sanding process.

It really is easier to try to find contractors on the internet focusing on setting up hardwood floors. Do a search for reliable companies providing high quality solutions on installation and sanding. Makeovers continually come with an expensive price however, you can get your way around it when you try to find reasonably priced deals on the internet. Verify the hardwood floor sanding cost with your list of contractors. Select one that provides economical yet effective services with reputation on quality. Change the look of your home with hardwood flooring systems, and bring in an even more elegant atmosphere in your interior.

Got $17K? Buy Olsen twins' furry backpack

The Row

For just $16,900, this backpack can be yours...

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Need a backpack? You can buy one at Target for less than $15.

Have $17,000? You can buy a pretty decent car.

Need a backpack, have $17,000, and think like an?Olsen twin? Then perhaps you would spend that nice chunk of cash on this bizarre, multi-colored fur backpack from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's accessory line. Ha, no, you probably wouldn't. But you COULD.

Yes, the newly unveiled bag from the famed acting twins line sells for $16,900. That's a bargain compared to the $39,000 crocodile backpack the twins' collection offered last year.

Gawker.com's headline about the bag was hilarious and blunt: "Olsens Unveil New $16,900 Backpack Crafted from Old Coonskin Caps They Dyed with Kool-Aid."

Except you can buy a pack of Kool-Aid for less than a dollar, and coonskin caps are available for less than $5. So you could assemble your own backpack and still have more than $16,800 to donate to charity, attend college, or start your own fashion backpack line.

What would you do with $16,900? Tell us on Facebook.

Your Lead Generation Team's Productivity and Conversions Need to ...

In recent posts, I?ve given advice about ways of maintaing accountability within your sales organization, and more specifically as it pertains to your lead generation function. This week, I?m going to continue with that trend, because each week it becomes more clear that those teams that expose their lead qualification reps? daily performance to management (and obviously one another on the team), are far more productive and ultimately successful than those who only expose it maybe once a week, month, or quarter.

I?ve seen some lead gen teams (including the company in the portfolio that I worked for a couple years back) actually require an end-of-day email update coming directly from the lead gen rep. In my case, the update included number of calls made, number of conversations had, demos set, and a quick synopsis of the conversations that resulted in demos, as well as any impediments that held me back that day. The end-of-day report took me about 15-20 minutes to write (depending on the demos set, and the amount of detail pertaining to those conversations that I wrote), and I sent it to both the venture partners at OpenView as well as the management team at the portfolio company, including the CEO. There were some days that I felt it was burden (particularly on those days when I didn?t have anything too wonderful to report), but at the end of the day, it kept me incredibly accountable to what I committed to when I accepted the job offer, and you better believe that I kept myself incredibly organized and highly productive each and everyday to make my end-of-day report as impressive as possible.

Plus, there was honestly NOTHING better than having a great day and getting a reply-all from the CEO telling me ?Great job today!? Or even having a day when I didn?t set any demos but left 50 voicemails and felt mentally exhausted, but still had a venture partners say ? ?Keep your head up, the demos will come with that type of activity!?

Don?t want your rep spending the last chunk of the day writing out this kind of report? Hey, it?s not for everyone or every manager. In fact, there is another great option. Have an automated email sent every evening coming from Salesforce.com (or whatever CRM you are using while wishing you are on Salesforce) that pulls your team?s daily productivity dashboard. If you are slick, you can also have your messaging dashboard sent to management and marketing (I discuss the messaging dashboard in this post).

If you?ve hired competitive, hardworking, and driven individuals this end-of-day update will be on their mind and keep them focused. ?Hmm?I could watch this 10-minute long YouTube video that my friend sent me, but it?s 3pm and I?ve only made 20 calls, had 3 conversations, and set no demos today ? maybe I should watch it later.?

You might be reading this and thinking ? wow, Devon seems a little OCD. Hey, I?ve heard worse. But, let?s be serious. Outbound lead qualification is a VERY expensive form of marketing for your business, and there are a LOT of distractions that could pull your team away from being productive. I?m assuming that you, as the manager, are juggling 100 balls because you are working at an expansion-stage organization. Why not find some simple ways to keep accountability high so that you don?t have to be breathing down everyone?s neck everyday? Let these updates push your reps to better manage themselves.

Do you have a rep who is really turned off by an end-of-day report (handcrafted or automated)? First of all, that?s a red flag. What does he/she have to hide?! Second of all, for a relatively junior role within the organization (and I?m not saying entry level ? because in most cases, 2-4 years experience is IDEAL for this role), honestly, what other opportunity do you get to have exposure to senior management and have them observing your hard work, commitment, drive and passion? I honestly believe that if I wasn?t sending my personal daily report as a lead qualifier a couple years back, I wouldn?t have received the promotion that I did after 6 months on the job because I wouldn?t have had that level of exposure to senior management!

Health Care As A Family Value | Health and Fitness

Instead of bloviate about the potential outcome of the health care reform decision by?the Supreme Court on Thursday, I would like to move us through a step we missed when we originally embarked on changing health care in 2010.? As a country, we never answered the important question, ?Should everyone have at least basic health care in this country and how much do we want to pay?? I think by the end of this post, you may consider basic health care as a necessary component of strong family values, equal rights for women, and even more strangely, equal rights for men.

First, a definition of basic health care.? Basic health care is not the same as the unlimited health care we expect for all of our ills today.? Basic health care is enough to keep us healthy, appropriately alive, and productive in society.? Preventive medicine, care for acute illness, and early treatment of common chronic disease are examples of basic care that would be very inexpensive and easy to provide without the need for getting insurance involved.

We currently pay $7,960 per person per year for health care in this country.? Taxpayers pay $3,660 of that bill.? In many countries, good health care is provided to everyone for less money than what taxpayers alone pay per person in this country for health care.? If we could provide at least basic health care to everyone in this country for less than what taxpayers pay today, should we do it?? And free market advocates, keep in mind we can have a secondary free market system paid for with private dollars in addition to a basic system.

So how is basic health care a component of strong family values?

Health insurance tied to employment started in the 1940?s as companies competed for a dearth of workers.? Offering health plans was a great way to get around wage controls during WWII.? In 1954, the institution of employer-provided health insurance was cemented when the IRS deemed employer contributions for health insurance exempt from taxable income.? The relationship flourished through the years.

Of course, to receive health care benefits, we have to work full time. In the 1950?s women were expected to stay at home and men worked the full time job to secure a paycheck and health care benefits for the family.? As we all know, this inherently put women in a one-down situation ? no job, no benefits, no skills and at the mercy of her husband?s character.? The man was the one-up, so he always had choices.

Men were shortchanged too. They had the burden of being the only breadwinner. Rarely did they get to see their child take a first step. The stress of the ?man-lifestyle? was and still is mostly unspoken, and the result is an unhealthier lifestyle that leads to earlier deaths.

Through the work of many women and men, women have made headway in their place in the world, but unfortunately still have a significant one-down situation. Women now have the same lifestyle as men in terms of work pace, and most have the additional responsibility of taking care of their children and their home. We are still in the process of educating men on the impossible sustainability of this model.? Men are gradually stepping up in child care duties, but many have difficulty leaving the mores of the ?man-lifestyle? behind.

And who really takes the brunt of this social model? ?The children. Plain and simple. We need to be there for our children as life education doesn?t happen through osmosis.

So where do health care and family values tie together?

Think of the flexibility if health care is no longer tied to employment:

  • If they can live within their means, parents could each work three to four days a week and have more time with their children.
  • Both men and women would have equal time to take care of their physical and mental health.
  • Entrepreneurship would flourish. Families would have an easier time starting small businesses.
  • Small and large employers would no longer have the burden of managing health care benefits for their employees.
  • The current fight of whether women can have it all or not can be settled. And better yet, men can have it all too.

If the Supreme Court upholds the entire law, the health insurance exchange will erode the need for employer based coverage. This is good. If the Supreme Court strikes down the entire law, who knows where we will go next? Hopefully good sense rules and ideology is left behind as we come up with the next solution.

As opined by many, if the Supreme Court upholds the law and strikes down only the individual mandate, the good parts of the law will stay intact.? We will be given the opportunity to start again on how we provide health care coverage in this country, and hopefully we will approach it more intelligently.? Those who believe in strong family values should take a stand and demand we create a system that provides a base of good care for everyone. Our country will be stronger, productive, resilient, and healthier as a result.

Questions, comments, suggestions? Post here, or reach me on Twitter @CarolynMcC, or at Carolyn.mcclanahan@gmail.com.

Get most out of Cellphone for Business |

We are living in an age and time when telephone communication has become indispensible for successfully running a business ? be it of any size or scale of operations. The mobile phone particularly has become commonplace for millions of people across the world. People now consider the ability to communicate through mobile phone as ordinary. The biggest advantage of mobile phones is obviously accessibility 24?7. An incoming caller (particularly customers) will not feel annoyed listening to replies like ?Mr. Smith is not available? jaw crusher. As a business owner, you can contact your field staff and travelling employees at all times. Likewise, employees can also communicate with you and refer critical problems any timewithout having to be in the office. Thus, if your key personnel are given mobile phones, then they become more easily accessible.

Effective use of mobile phones can help improve employer to employee, employee to employee and more importantly, customer to business communications cone crusher. Mobile phones are now ubiquitously used that many customers expect your employees to have one. Instead of feeling frustrated when told that a particular person is not there to answer a call, many customers will now straightaway ask for his/her mobile number. A mobile phone, being an individual-owned device, gives you more time to communicate with a customer and you can also hold an important conversation from anywhere.

When traveling on business purposes on a working day, then normally you would lose many hours of communication but with a mobile phone, it need not be so. A mobile phone allows you to confirm and check details quickly with your office, even at times when you are sitting in front of a prospective customer. A mobile phone means you can also check with your office while away from and need not worry about returning to find that a major development is behind schedule.Jaw crusher:http://www.hxjqchina.com/product-list_11.html
ball mill:http://www.hx-crushers.com/

With the rapidly advancing technology, the mobile phones, can act as a complete functional organizer. This is particularly true of mobile phone models aimed at business users. You can set reminders and notes in the same way as you would with a paper organizer. There is no need to wait for viewing email messages as it is now possible to access all your emails via the WAP and GPRS (mobile internet) connections of new model mobile phones. In fact, some mobile network packages even allow notification of send a fax.

A good mobile package means you will be informed about all important communications while you are away and hence your ability to communicate with customers /employees /suppliers/ associates is not hindered. A mobile phone can serve as an effective extension of a land phone. Instead of callers to your land phone then having to try your mobile number, they can be forwarded almost instantly to your mobile phone if you are not available.

One of the major worries about providing employees with mobile phones is that they will misuse them for personal calls and waste office hours and also run up massive bills. But, banning personal use of the phones outright can create a negative attitude towards employees.

Black Canyon Coffee: International Thai Cafe + Giveaway ~ The ...

Among Asian cuisines, Thai is one of those I haven't figured out yet if I truly like or not. Although I'm adventurous when it comes to food, I find the bold and complex flavors of Thai cuisine quite overwhelming for my palate. However, I'm learning to understand the merge of sweet, spicy and sour by trying out more Thai restaurants. And for my most recent adventure, I headed to Black Canyon Coffee, the largest caf? chain in Thailand.

A highly successful brand, Black Canyon Coffee is a coffee shop and full service casual dining restaurant with over 200 branches throughout Thailand. With about 40 branches abroad, the Thai caf? finally opened its first in the Philippines -- at SM Southmall. And although Black Canyon Coffee has just opened its doors to hungry and thirsty Metro diners last Friday, June 22, I was surprised to see its warm, casual and laid-back space packed when I went for an evening visit yesterday.
Black Canyon Coffee has a really wide selection of food and beverage items. And for a light start, I first had a serving of Yum Salmon (P188) -- a spicy salmon salad with green onions, shallots, chili and cashew nuts drenched in a lime sauce. This Thai salad has a refreshing blend of zesty flavors which I really dig. However, it was a little too spicy for me. (The spiciness of the dishes had already been toned down to suit Filipino palates.)
Next I sampled was the caf?'s award-winning Tom Yum Goong (P192) which is a spicy but flavorful prawn soup. Being the 2010 and 2011 Tom Yum Champion in Thailand, this hot bowl didn't fail to impress. Every spoonful is an explosion of hot chili flavors and refreshing zesty notes from the cilantro and lime. Unlike the Yum Salmon, I was able to tolerate the mild yet gradually kicking spiciness of this traditional Thai soup.
After the spicy dishes, I got to try another award-winning item, Pad Thai (P168). Hailed as the 2009 World Pad Thai Champion, this serving of sweet, savory and tangy stir-fried rice noodles with tamarind, lemon juice and fish sauce didn't fail to get me digging in. The noodles, eggs, shrimps, beansprouts and crushed peanuts also created a very interesting mix of textures which made every forkful enjoyable.

Being in a coffee shop, I also didn't miss getting my dose of caffeine. From the caf?'s separate menu for beverages, I ordered the Mexican Iced Coffee (P130) -- a nutty-tasting blend of iced coffee with Kahlua syrup, milk and dark chocolate shavings served in a quirky glass boot. (Trivia: They had 34 boot glasses in BCC Southmall.)

THE VERDICT

Although I still haven't found myself converted to being a hardcore Thai cuisine fan, I sure gained a new-found puppy love for Thai food after this visit. SM Southmall might be a little far from my place, but with Black Canyon Coffee's sleek and laid-back ambiance, friendly service, wide selection of food and drinks, and a set of very affordable prices to boot, I think another trip down south is in order.

At least $275K raised for bullied NY bus monitor

A video of a 68-year-old school bus monitor mercilessly taunted by seventh graders became an international online rallying point against bullies Thursday, with a fund for the Rochester, N.Y., grandmother raising at least $275,000 and a deluge of people demanding harsh punishment for the boys.

Police said Karen Klein does not want her young tormenters to face criminal charges, partly because of the storm of criticism leveled at the boys from the Rochester suburb of Greece after the video went viral.

"They've received death threats," Greece Police Capt. Steve Chatterton said Thursday. "Their families have been threatened. We have custody of one of their cellphones, and he had over 1,000 missed calls and 1,000 text messages threatening him. And he's 13 years old. That must stop."

The verbal abuse was captured in a 10-minute cellphone video recorded Monday by a student of Athena Middle School in suburban Rochester and later posted to YouTube. The video shows Klein trying her best to ignore the stream of profanity, insults and outright threats directed at her. One student taunted: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you."

Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.

Eventually, she appears to break down in tears.

"You want to jump into that bus and you want to grab those kids and say 'Knock it off!' And you want to hold her," said Amy Weber, a 43-year-old independent filmmaker from the Detroit area who pledged $100 Thursday through the international crowd-funding site Indiegogo.com.

"I think we hear about bullying every day and we become a little desensitized to it. This puts it in our face," said Weber, who is making a feature film about a bully.

Klein told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that it took "a lot of willpower" not to respond to the jeers from the four boys riding the bus operated by the Greece Central School District. Klein said she was "amazed" at the support she received.

"I've got these nice letters, emails, Facebook messages," she said. "It's like, wow, there's a whole world out there that I didn't know. It's really awesome."

She said she hopes the parents will talk to their children about being "a little more respectful."

Klein did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The video logged more than 2 million views by Thursday afternoon, breaking hearts and raising passions of people who recalled bullying incidents in their own pasts. The fundraiser set up on Indiegogo.com shattered its goal of raising $5,000 to send the grandmother of eight on a "vacation of a lifetime." More than 12,000 people donated, many in denominations of $20 or less.

"I don't see how anyone can watch that and not be touched by it. It made me realize ? and I posted on my Facebook wall ? that sticks and stones may break my bones but words will still hurt you no matter how old you are," said Deana Rock, a 42-year-old marketing professional from Williston, Vt., who pledged $30.

Rock said she was moved to tears by the video and donated the money so Klein would not have to get back on the bus.

Police in the suburb of Greece had to step up patrols near the houses of the four boys and said they had received several threatening hoax calls from people. The boys had not yet apologized to Klein as of Thursday afternoon, though police said they regretted their acts and their parents are cooperating.

The district apologized to Klein and will discipline all four students.

The swell of support for Klein follows a recent surge in awareness of bullying that has brought the issue from the classroom to the stage and screen to the White House.

In September, after 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of suburban Buffalo killed himself after complaining about being bullied about his sexuality, pop singer Lady Gaga decried the loss of another life to bullying, tweeting to millions of followers that she'd take her concerns to President Barack Obama.

This year, the White House held a conference on bullying prevention, estimating that it affects 13 million students, or about a third of those attending school. Obama said he hoped to "dispel the myth that bullying is just a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up."

In April, the documentary film "Bully" examined the problem by following five kids over the course of a school year.

HBT: Umps send Peralta's glove to MLB offices

Rays reliever Joel Peralta was ejected from last night?s game after Nationals manager Davey Johnson called the umpires? attention to pine tar on his glove and now the confiscated glove is on its way from Washington to New York.

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that the umpires shipped Peralta?s glove to the MLB offices for further examination, which means a suspension is probably looming.

According to Kilgore an official ruling is unlikely until tomorrow, but the precedent for a ?foreign substance? is 10 games. In the meantime Peralta will be available out of the Rays? bullpen tonight, which should make for some interesting drama if manager Joe Maddon calls him into the game.

Chris Brown-Drake ?fight? club shut down

(NYP)

The Soho nightclub where last week's brawl involving hip-hop stars Chris Brown and Drake which left several people, including San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker, injured has been shut down indefinitely by the New York Police Department for undisclosed code violations.

W.i.P., where Thursday's melee took place, and Greenhouse--which houses W.i.P.--were both closed by the NYPD's Civil Enforcement Unit on Saturday, a day after Jonathan Cantor, the club's manager of Greenhouse, was arrested for two outstanding warrants unrelated to the fracas.

According to ABC News, Brown's bodyguard, who was hospitalized with "a massive cut to his head," has since filed a criminal complaint. According to TMZ.com, a woman who was hit by a bottle during the fight--which may or may not have been over Rihanna--has filed a complaint, too.

Parker, a member of the French basketball team, said he suffered a scratched retina and admitted himself to a local hospital when he arrived in Paris to prepare for the Summer Olympics.

"I was with my friend Chris Brown and me and my friends took some punches, so I'll be missing the start of the French team because I can't do anything for a week except keep the lens in and then take drops," Parker said, according to the Associated Press. "They started throwing bottles everywhere. I don't know what happened. At first [my eye] was OK, but then it started getting worse and when the plane landed it was really hurting so I went straight to the ER."

Publicists for both Brown and Drake maintain their clients did nothing wrong.

"Chris, Karrueche [Brown's girlfriend] and his friends were victims of a brutal attack," Brown's publicist told ABCNews.com. "They sustained several injuries.? Chris and his party are cooperating with New York authorities who are pursuing this incident further."

"Drake did not participate in any wrongdoing of any kind," Drake's publicist said in separate statement. "He was on his way out of the club when the altercation began. He did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury to person or damage to property."

According to the Post, the club's abrupt closing ruined the evening for at least two groups of would-be clubgoers:

"This is crap," Amanda Olsen, 32, who came from Chicago with her girlfriend, Kiona Baker, to celebrate Baker's 26th birthday. "It ruined her birthday, we're pretty angry."

Ryan Gordon, 31, is visiting the city for the first time from Phoenix with a group of friends.

"We heard it was a really cool club and thought to come by. We're all dressed up nice for this place and now we have to go to a regular bar."

Microsoft's mystery announcement happens Monday at 6:30pm EST, get your liveblog here!

What to do when Microsoft schedules two major announcements in one week? Plan a liveblog and cue the speculation, of course. With a sneak peek of Windows Phone Apollo coming in just two days, we're pretty confident tomorrow's press conference won't have anything to do with mobile phone software. But Win8 tablets? Perhaps a Kindle Fire competitor running Windows RT? Now we're talking. Or maybe there's a piddly chance we'll actually hear more about Xbox Music? With no hints coming out of Redmond, your guess is as good as ours until the event kicks off. Be sure to bookmark this link and join us tomorrow at 6:30pm EST as we give you up-to-the-minute coverage, live from Microsoft's press room in Los Angeles.

Suu Kyi: Nobel Peace Prize shattered my isolation

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi declared Saturday that the Nobel Peace Prize she won while under house arrest 21 years ago helped to shatter her sense of isolation and ensured that the world would demand democracy in her military-controlled homeland.

Suu Kyi received two standing ovations inside Oslo's city hall as she gave her long-delayed acceptance speech to the Norwegian Nobel Committee in front of Norway's King Harald, Queen Sonja and about 600 dignitaries. The 66-year-old champion of political freedom praised the power of her 1991 Nobel honor both for saving her from the depths of personal despair and shining an enduring spotlight on injustices in distant Myanmar.

"Often during my days of house arrest, it felt as though I were no longer a part of the real world," she said to a silent chamber, which was lined with rainbows of freshly cut zinnias and towers of orchids and gladiolas. "There was the house which was my world. There was the world of others who also were not free but who were together in prison as a community. And there was the world of the free. Each one was a different planet pursuing its own separate course in an indifferent universe.

"What the Nobel Peace Prize did was to draw me once again into the world of other human beings, outside the isolated area in which I lived, to restore a sense of reality to me. ... And what was more important, the Nobel Prize had drawn the attention of the world to the struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma. We were not going to be forgotten," she said during her 40-minute oration.

Suu Kyi, who since winning freedom in 2010 has led her National League for Democracy party into opposition in Myanmar's parliament, offered cautious support for the first tentative steps toward democratic reform in her country. But she said progress would depend both on maintaining foreign pressure on the army-backed government ? and on carefully managing the ethnic tensions threatening to tear apart the country.

"If I advocate cautious optimism, it is not because I do not have faith in the future, but because I do not want to encourage blind faith. Without faith in the future, without the conviction that democratic values and fundamental human rights are not only necessary but possible for our society, our movement could not have been sustained throughout the destroying years," she said, referring to the past two decades since Myanmar's military leaders rejected her party's overwhelming triumph in 1990 elections, one year after Suu Kyi's own imprisonment.

Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, introduced Suu Kyi as a leader of "awe-inspiring tenacity, sacrifice and firmness of principle."

"In your isolation, you have become a moral leader for the whole world," he said from the podium, turning to the seated Suu Kyi.

"Your voice became increasingly clear the more the military regime tried to isolate you. Your cause mobilized your people and prevailed over a massive military junta. Whenever your name is mentioned or when you speak, your words bring new energy and hope to the entire world," Jagland said to applause.

Suu Kyi, in a traditional Burmese gown of purple, lilac and ivory, offered only a stoic Mona Lisa smile at the end of her speech, greeted with a 2-minute ovation. As on her previous public events this week in Switzerland and Norway, she spoke with a voice of unerring crisp diction but a physical presence bordering on exhaustion.

Yet Saturday's schedule offered no letup. She left the city hall for the neighboring Nobel Peace Center where artists had designed an interactive display called "Mother Democracy" chronicling the highlights of her life. She chatted in Burmese with about 300 refugees from Myanmar granted asylum in Norway.

Then she addressed a public rally that attracted about 10,000 Oslo locals and tourists, many from foreign cruise liners docked along the capital's nearby shoreline. Many waved Norwegian flags and leaflets bearing Suu Kyi's image as she thanked the Norwegian people for giving so many of her countrymen and women sanctuary from oppression.

Smiling with delight as church bells tolled, she also led the crowd in Burmese chants wishing everyone peace and happiness.

"Suu Kyi is such an incredible person. It's a blessing to be here, to get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see her, to hear her," said Javier Rodriguez, 50, an airline steward from Los Angeles who happened to be on an Oslo layover and staked out the peace center before Suu Kyi's arrival.

"There's so few people in the world willing to sacrifice everything for justice and peace. She's in the same league as Nelson Mandela. Everyone should cherish and honor her," he said.

In her Nobel speech, Suu Kyi related her long experience of state-ordered isolation to key precepts of her Buddhist faith, particularly two forms of suffering: Being forced to live apart from loved ones, and being forced to live among those one dislikes. She referred only fleetingly to the Myanmar authorities' refusal to permit her husband, the Buddhist scholar Michael Aris, to see her from 1995 until his death from cancer in 1999.

Instead she emphasized the continued suffering of others. She won spontaneous applause from the crowd as she appealed for foreign governments to understand that many hundreds of political prisoners remain in Myanmar.

"It is to be feared that because the best known detainees have been released, the remainder, the unknown ones, will be forgotten. I am standing here because I was once a prisoner of conscience. As you look at me and listen to me, please remember the often repeated truth that one prisoner of conscience is one too many," she said.

She said it was unrealistic to expect the world ever to reach a state of "absolute peace," yet mankind must be compelled to pursue the goal "as a traveler in a desert fixes his eyes on the one guiding star that will lead him to salvation. Even if we do not achieve perfect peace on earth, because perfect peace is not of this earth, common endeavors to gain peace will unite individuals and nations in trust and friendship, and help us to make our human community safer and kinder."

And Suu Kyi praised the value of simple, every-day acts of human kindness as the most powerful force in promoting peace anywhere. " Every kindness I received, small or big," she said, referring to her 15 years of house arrest or imprisonment, "convinced me that there could never be enough of it in our world."

On Sunday she heads to the Norwegian city of Bergen to meet charities and members of Norway's Burmese refugee community, then on Monday speaks alongside U2 singer Bono before the pair fly to Dublin, Ireland, for a celebrity-studded concert in her honor. On Tuesday she starts engagements in England, including a visit to her Oxford University alma mater and a speech to the joint houses of Parliament.

Mitt Romney sits for an interview, and not just on Fox News

Mitt Romney sat down for an interview on 'Face the Nation', fielding hard balls not typically thrown at him on Fox News. Meanwhile, Obama strategist David Plouffe darted among four other Sunday talk shows, zinging Romney and defending Obama's controversial moves.

Mitt Romney threw off his media security blanket Sunday. That is, he sat down for a substantial TV interview that was not hosted by the friendly folks at Fox News.

Appearing on CBS?s ?Face the Nation,? he faced veteran newsman Bob Schieffer, who peppered him with questions about the economy, immigration, Europe?s financial crisis, and other issues.

It wasn?t exactly the Spanish Inquisition (no verbal water-boarding), nor was it anything like a proper press conference where reporters could tag-team him.

Know your US presidents? See if D.C. Decoder can stump you!

But there were follow-up questions. Three times, for example, Romney ducked answering whether he?d repeal President Obama?s order regarding the children of illegal immigrants brought to this country.

That?s a tough one for Romney, who?s feeling pressure from some prominent Republicans (Jeb Bush,?Marco Rubio, and?Haley Barbour among them) to back away from the very tough line he took on immigration during the GOP primary debates.

Now, he told Schieffer, ?I would work with Congress to put in place a long-term solution for the children of those that have come here illegally.? (On immigration, it seems, he?s sounding more and more like that old softy Newt Gingrich.)

Romney was questioned on another ticklish subject ? Obamacare, the model for which was Romney?s own health insurance program when he was governor of Massachusetts.

With the Supreme Court's ruling on the constitutionality of Obama's health care law expected as soon as Monday, Romney described what he would do if the justices threw it out.

He wants to make sure people "don't have to worry about losing their insurance" if they already have a medical condition and change jobs; that individuals can buy coverage on their own, if they choose to do so, "on the same tax-advantage basis" as companies do; and that states, aided by federal dollars, take responsibility for the poor and uninsured.

Again, that sounds at least somewhat more nuanced than his ?I?d repeal Obamacare on day one? line.

Here?s Romney?s exchange regarding Europe?s financial crisis:

Schieffer: "If the European economy falls apart, the American economy is going to be in big trouble. What should we be doing right now?"
