As the dust around Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr begins to settle, more details are emerging on how the former will enhance the latter's advertising offerings.

Ads on Tumblr could be served from an ad exchange, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer told investors yesterday. Ad Age said, in two different reports:

Yahoo is also considering selling premium ads on Tumblr and to sell ad inventory through exchanges. How premium ads will appear or what exchanges may be used, Ms. Mayer did not say.

Ad exchanges work by offering inventory ? in this case space on Tumblr ? to bidders in an auction. The highest bidder wins the spot. The inventory is triggered when a user carrying a tracking "cookie" in their web browser calls up a page.

The cookies are the key, as AdExchanger pointed out: Tumblr potentially offers a vast, logged-in audience of 225 million unique users a month. If Tumblr allows its login or cookie to be matched with cookies that users bring from other websites, that would offer a target-rich environment for advertisers.

For example, a user shopping for shoes might look at several shoe websites, and pick up cookies from all of them. Then she might check in to her Tumblr account, at which point the shoe cookies could be matched with the Tumblr login cookies and offered for bid. The user might start to see shoe ads inside Tumblr.

A Tumblr ad exchange might work a lot like Facebook's own exchange, FBX, which has been a huge success.

It's an easy way for a large media company like Tumblr to plug in a huge flow of ad dollars.

Tumblr appears to need the money. We previously noted that Tumblr made only $13 million in revenue last year. Now even that number has been called into doubt ? it was more like $5 million. That's a negligible sum from such a large user base.

Tumblr CEO David Karp said yesterday Tumblr was not self-sustaining:

?"There was no path or expectation to sell this company, certainly not this year, and we were well on our way -- I should say, are on our way -- to making this a self-sustaining business with our advertising products," Mr. Karp said in an interview Monday with Ad Age. "The conversation with Yahoo started around their ability to help us accelerate that business."

He was more blunt with Bloomberg:

?We are not cash-flow positive yet, which means we are always running out of money,? he said. ?There was no expectation we were selling the company -- certainly not this year. This was our providence.?

A source told Valleywag Tumblr made only $5 million last year.

If a Tumblr exchange were launched, one key problem would be how to make sure the ads were sufficiently creative to not screw up Tumblr's artsy environment.

The nature of an exchange is simply that the highest bidder wins and is allowed to serve whatever ad they want ? the process is entirely automated. Mayer said she was keen yesterday to ensure that the ads should be "something people take delight in."

Mayer hinted they may have a way to solve that dilemma: by only allowing ads on users' individual pages with their permission:

Ms. Mayer also said ads will eventually appear on individual Tumblr sites, though only "with the blogger's permission." She declined to comment on how that would be set up and whether it might entail revenue-sharing agreements.

Put those two notions together ? an ad exchange with inventory based only on users who opt-in ? and that could be a powerful permission-based ad system. Generally, advertisers far prefer targeting users who have given permission to be targeted than simply serving ads at cookies.

Toronto mayor urged to step down if crack allegations true

TORONTO (Reuters) - The mayor of Canada's largest city, facing allegations that he smoked crack cocaine, and made racial and homophobic slurs on video, must either refute the accusations or step down, fellow city politicians say.

"If the allegations are false, then the mayor is owed some apologies," said Councillor Josh Matlow, who has clashed with Ford on transit issues, but who usually takes a centrist line in a polarized city council.

"If the allegations are proven true beyond a reasonable doubt, then the mayor should resign."

An editor from U.S. media outlet Gawker and two reporters from the Toronto Star said separately they saw a cellphone video that appeared to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine.

Ford, who is no stranger to controversy, was elected mayor of Toronto more than two years ago after serving as a councillor for 10 years. He called the allegations "ridiculous" on Friday and suggested they were part of a broader campaign against him by the left-leaning Toronto Star newspaper.

Dennis Morris, Ford's lawyer, told Reuters on Monday that it was still too early to consider legal action over the allegations and that if there is a video, it needs to be made public so that Canadians can judge the content for themselves.

"We're all waiting to see whether there's anything within this video and whether or not it's been doctored, edited, altered, that type of thing," he said.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the existence of the video or its contents.

Ford's brother, Doug, his closest ally on City Council, broke a brief and uncharacteristic silence on Saturday, telling local radio station Newstalk 1010, "I have never seen my brother involved with anything like coke."

The brothers canceled their regular Sunday appearance on a radio show at the same station.

The controversy made headlines across Canada and around the world, although some focused as much on Ford's crude remarks as the allegations of crack use.

"The allegations that have been leveled at Mayor Ford are not just serious, but they are also criminal," Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam told CBC News. "I would encourage the mayor to resign and to seek help as soon as possible should this be true."

The Toronto Star reporters who watched the video said Ford calls Liberal leader Justin Trudeau a "fag" and derisively refers to players on the high school football team he coaches as "minorities".

"If the mayor the of world's most diverse city is proven to have uttered racial and homophobic slurs, then he's not fit for the office," Councillor Matlow told Reuters.

Toronto City Council contains both left-leaning councilors, mostly from the city's core, and right-leaning candidates like Ford, who are mostly from suburban areas like Etobicoke.

The two groups tend to take different approaches on issues from transit to unionized labor, with often comical policy flip flops. In one example, City Council imposed a 5-cent fee on plastic grocery bags, then ignored Ford's plea to remove the fee and voted to ban the bags completely.

They then reversed that decision, leaving the issue exactly where it was before the whole debate started.

Elected on a platform to stop the gravy train at City Hall, Ford has courted controversy on many occasions; the Toronto Star on Friday published a list of 42 "extraordinary moments" in his political career.

The list includes accusations that Ford skipped City Council meetings to coach high-school football and engaged in a confrontation outside his home with a reporter.

He was briefly ordered out of office in 2012 after he was found guilty of conflict of interest, but won an appeal and was allowed to finish his four-year term as mayor.

In 2008, assault charges brought against Ford by his wife Renata were withdrawn by the Crown because of inconsistencies in Renata's story. The couple later reconciled.

The rumblings of scandal have eroded Ford's popularity, although polls conducted before the reports of the video still enjoyed support from some 50 percent of the population, most of them from in Toronto's suburbs.

Both Gawker and the Star say the video is being shopped around by people with connections to the drug trade.

In an effort buy the video and post it online, Gawker launched a "Crackstarter" campaign last week to raise $200,000. It has so far raised more than $76,000.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Cricket hero Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf party won a revote in an upmarket constituency of Karachi on Sunday, unofficial results showed, a day after gunmen killed a party leader, setting the stage for protests and counter-protests.

Khan blamed the killing of Zara Shahid Hussain on the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) party, which has a stranglehold on the city. Furious MQM leaders denied responsibility, condemned the killing and demanded a retraction from Khan.

But results from a handful of constituencies across the country are still uncertain amid accusations of vote-rigging. There is re-polling in a few others where security issues prevented voting.

Last week's election gave the MQM 18 of 19 national assembly seats in Karachi. Now the PTI has one seat, according to unofficial results.

Both the MQM, angry at the accusations, and the PTI have called for protests on Monday which often turn violent in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city. Karachi generates around half of the government's revenue and stability in the city is key to stability of the whole country.

Police said that two gunmen shot Hussain on Saturday outside her home in Defense.

"I hold (MQM leader) Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts," Khan, recovering in hospital from a fall during campaigning, said in a tweet.

"I also hold the British government responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats."

Altaf Hussain is accused of murder in Pakistan and leads his party remotely from exile in England. His party is designated a terrorist organization by Canada, a charge it strongly denies.

In recent days, he gave a speech which many Pakistanis felt was an incitement to attack political rivals. British police are investigating whether or not it constituted a hate speech.

Karachi, the nuclear-armed country's key port, is home to 18 million people. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a combination of political killings, attacks by the Pakistan Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime.

Former O.J. Simpson attorney refutes testimony

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? The lawyer who defended O.J. Simpson on armed robbery charges delivered a potentially heavy blow to the former football star's bid for a new trial Friday, testifying that Simpson knew his buddies had guns on them when he went to a hotel room to reclaim some sports memorabilia.

Miami attorney Yale Galanter took the stand in a frequently combative hearing over Simpson's claim that he was so badly represented by Galanter that his conviction should be thrown out. Point by point, Galanter contradicted much of own former client's testimony and defended his handling of the case.

Galanter said Simpson confided to him that he had asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room confrontation with two memorabilia dealers in 2007 and "he knew he screwed up."

The attorney denied giving Simpson the go-ahead to try to retrieve the items, which included photos and signed footballs that Simpson believed had been stolen from him. He said he advised Simpson not to take matters into his own hands.

And Galanter disputed Simpson's claim that Galanter never told him about plea bargain discussions with prosecutors that could have resulted in a prison sentence of just a few years.

Simpson, 65, was convicted in 2008 of kidnapping and armed robbery over the hotel room episode and was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison. He and his new lawyers, Patricia Palm and Ozzie Fumo, allege Galanter botched the trial. District Judge Linda Marie Bell has not indicated when she will rule on the request for a new trial.

On the stand, Galanter hesitated and spoke only after he paused, breathed deeply and was reminded that Simpson had waived attorney-client privilege.

"I'm very uncomfortable doing this," Galanter said.

Testifying about events leading up to the hotel room incident, Galanter said he was surprised when Simpson told him over dinner at a Las Vegas hotel that he and several other men were planning a "sting" the next morning to take back items he believed had been stolen from him in Los Angeles.

Galanter said he advised against it.

"When he first mentioned it, it just went over my head," Galanter said of Simpson's plan. "About a minute or two later, I leaned over and said, 'What are you talking about? What are you doing?'

"He told me he finally had a lead on some personal pictures and memorabilia that was stolen from him years earlier," Galanter testified. "I said, 'O.J., you've got to call the police.'"

According to Simpson, Galanter advised the former NFL running back that it was his legal right to retrieve the items; told Simpson not to testify at the trial; and failed to tell Simpson that prosecutors had offered plea bargains. Earlier in the week, Simpson testified that he didn't know anyone in the hotel room had guns.

Another Simpson lawyer, Tom Pitaro, insistently cross-examined Galanter closely about financial aspects of the case. During one objection, the judge asked Pitaro where he was going with his questions.

"What Mr. Galanter has done is, this man has received over a half-million dollars and has put his interest, his financial interest, above the interest of his client," Pitaro said.

Galanter insisted he told Simpson at least three times that prosecutors discussed plea bargains with him. But he said Simpson rejected them.

Simpson said, "No deal. No way" to an offer from the district attorney of five to seven years in prison, Galanter said. Later, during the trial, Simpson turned down an even better offer, Galanter said.

"I went out in the hall and said to O.J, 'There is an offer of two to five.' He said, 'See if they will take a year,'" Galanter testified. "I discussed a year with them, and they said no and the trial went on."

Galanter was also grilled on his trial decisions, such as not objecting to a recording of a discussion that mentioned Simpson's sensational 1995 murder trial, which ended with his acquittal in the slayings of his ex-wife and a friend of her. Galanter noted that the judge at the armed robbery trial had instructed the jury it couldn't consider the murder case.

If Simpson succeeds in getting his armed robbery conviction thrown out, prosecutors will have to either retry him or offer a plea bargain. It is also possible Simpson could be freed with credit for time served. If he loses, he will be sent back to prison and will probably appeal to a higher court. He will be 70 before he is eligible for parole.

White House releases Benghazi documents

The emails show that the CIA on Sept. 14, 2012 drafted the requested talking points regarding the attack and removed references to al-Qaida and changed Benghazi "attacks" to Benghazi "demonstrations" before the White House saw the talking points.

"The attacks in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo," read one phrase in the original talking points.

That was changed later that afternoon to read: "the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests" because senior administration officials said it was deemed an awkward account of events.

The original memo referred to "Islamic extremists with ties to al-Qai'da" participating in the attack, but the reference to extremists was later couched and the reference to al Qaida was removed citing the ongoing FBI investigation.

The emails show those changes were made before concerns expressed by the State Department.

A senior administration official told reporters Wednesday that the White House had taken the step of releasing the emails-- as they were provided to members of Congress-- following misinformation regarding the exchanges and allegations of a coverup.

Republicans have charged that the White House played down the role of suspected terrorists in the attack, which left four Americans dead including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. GOP lawmakers have said that President Barack Obama's reelection campaign did not want to undermine its message that al-Qaida was on the run. Obama has flatly denied any attempt to deceive the public, and on Monday he called the allegations a "sideshow" that dishonors the memories of those killed.

Some of the back-and-forth has centered on the email messages among top officials looking to craft "talking points" for members of Congress just a few days after the attack. The White House has accused Republicans of pushing "fabricated" messages to damage the administration.

On Wednesday, senior administration officials briefed reporters on the messages and provided binders of 100 pages of emails. The officials said the communications would show that the CIA led the changes to the talking points, including alterations that Republicans claim show a political motive. The officials went through the emails page by page.

CSN: McNabb says he will retire an Eagle

According to Donovan McNabb, he will retire as an Eagle.

On ESPN 97.7 radio, via ESPNCNY.com, McNabb said on Monday afternoon, "I will retire as an Eagle and I look forward to that opportunity and that day."

McNabb told Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn that he and the Eagles will hold a ceremony during a September game, but McNabb has not decided which game.

The Eagles play two home games in September, one against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 15. The other matchup would appear to be the more obvious choice with the Eagles hosting former head coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Sept. 19.

After his lone season with the Minnesota Vikings, the former Eagle in 2012 spent his first season out of professional football as an analyst for the NFL Network and was a weekly guest on Comcast SportsNet.

The Eagles selected McNabb as the second overall pick in the 1999 draft and he played 11 seasons with the Birds en route to becoming the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards (32,873), touchdown passes (216) and games played at quarterback (148). McNabb also holds the Eagles' record for most passing yards in a season (3,916) and ranks second with the most touchdown passes in a season (31).

"I love going back to Philadelphia," McNabb said as a guest on ESPN 97.7 radio.

The Syracuse product led the Eagles to six NFC East crowns, five NFC Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance.

"I have nothing but love for the Philly fans, even the ones who were highly criticizing me or opinionated in any way," McNabb said. "I can't get upset at them because my job is to get out on the field and be productive. That's what quarterbacking is all about.

"The fans are appreciative, I'm appreciative of them."

ABC officially relaunches its Player app as Watch ABC with live TV streaming

Just as it revealed in an interview this weekend after months of rumors, the Disney / ABC Television Group has launched Watch ABC as an "open access preview" for New York and Philadelphia residents. Available on the web and as an iOS or Kindle Fire app in place of the old ABC Player, it still offers video on-demand playback of the network's shows, but is the first to add live network TV streaming in those two areas. It will require customers to log in with their cable / satellite TV account details (Comcast, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, Midcontinent and AT&T U-verse are all signed up already) for access starting July 1st, but for now there's no such restriction. ABC is promising a launch in all ABC-owned station markets by the start of the fall broadcast season, though most areas will need to wait for agreements with their local affiliates.

Currently scheduled for launch after July 1st are Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham and Fresno, while Hearst Television has already signed on to launch streaming in its 13 markets as well. The app itself should resemble the WatchESPN and Watch Disney services we've seen roll out previously, and AirPlay streaming is disabled. The press release mentions Kindle Fire support, though we didn't see it in the Appstore yet, and it's coming to Samsung Galaxy devices "soon." There aren't any other Android devices mentioned, but hopefully more platforms will follow quickly. Turkey's deputy prime minister said Syria's intelligence and military were "the usual suspects" behind the bombings, but said authorities were still investigating the attacks.

The blasts, which were 15 minutes apart, raised fears that Syria's brutal civil war violence was crossing into its neighbor.

One of the car bombs exploded outside the city hall while the other went off outside the post office in the town of Reyhanli, a main hub for Syrian refugees and rebel activity in Turkey's Hatay province, just across the border. Images showed people frantically carrying victims through the rubble-strewn streets to safety.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said about 40 people were killed and 100 others wounded in the blasts and linked them to Syria. There was no immediate information on the identities or nationalities of the victims.

"We know that the Syrian refugees have become a target of the Syrian regime," he said. "Reyhanli was not chosen by coincidence."

"Our thoughts are that their mukhabarat (Syrian intelligence agency) and armed organizations are the usual suspects in planning and the carrying out of such devilish plans," he said.

Arinc said Turkey would "do whatever is necessary" if proven that Syria is behind the attack.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier also raised the possibility that the bombings may be related to Turkey's peace talks with Kurdish rebels meant to end a nearly 30-year-old conflict.

Syrian mortar rounds have fallen over the border before, but if the explosion turns out to be linked to Syria it would be by far the biggest death toll in Turkey related to its neighbor's civil war.

Syria shares a more than 500-mile border with Turkey, which has been a crucial supporter of the Syrian rebel cause. Ankara has allowed its territory to be used as a logistics base and staging center for Syrian insurgents.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu vowed from Berlin that Turkey would act.

"Those who for whatever reason attempt to bring the external chaos into our country will get a response," he said.

Better dyes for imaging technology

May 12, 2013 ? From microscopes to MRI scanners, imaging technology is growing ever more vital in the world's hospitals, whether for the diagnosis of illness or for research into new cures. Imaging technology requires dyes or contrast agents of some sort. Current contrast agents and dyes are expensive, difficult to work with and far from ideal. Now, Danish chemists have discovered a new dye and proved its worth against any of the dyes currently available.

Thomas Just S?rensen and Bo Wegge Laursen are chemists at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. In a series of publications, they have shown that the aza-oxa-trangulenium dyes have the potential to outperform all fluorescent dyes currently used in imaging.

"Our dyes are ten times better, far cheaper and easier to use. The latter I believe, will lead to expanded opportunities and broadened use, by physicians and researchers in developing countries, for example." Says Thomas Just S?rensen.

Visual noise blocks correct diagnosis

It might seem odd, but one of the central challenges when taking pictures of cells and organs, is to avoid noise. The agents that make it possible to see microscopic biological structures are luminescent, but then, so is tissue. Consequently, the contrast agent's light risks being overpowered by "light noise." Just as the dial and hands of a watch might glow-in-the-dark, tissue becomes luminescent when exposed to light. Tissue and other organic structures luminesce, or lights up, for 10 nanoseconds after exposure to light. The light-life of an ordinary dye is the same -- 10 nanoseconds. But triangulenium dyes produce light for an entire 100 nanoseconds.

The long life of the triangulenium dyes means that an image can be produced without background noise. Furthermore, the extra 90 nanoseconds opens the possibility of filming living images of the processes occurring within cells, for example when a drug attacks an illness.

Neither expensive, nor difficult or technically demanding

Medical image analysis departments currently devote an incredible amount of time to staining samples, because all samples must be treated with two agents. The use of triangulenium dyes necessitates only one dye. And in contrast with typical dyes, no specialized equipment is needed to see the dyes in tissue samples. A lens from a pair of polarized sunglasses and an ordinary microscope are all that are required.

Open Source dye despite obvious competitiveness

When one compares the advantages of triangulenium dyes against the three million Danish kroner per gram price tag of traditional dyes,(500.000$US)(320.000?) you would expect that the new dye would immediately out-compete its predecessors. However, up to now S?rensen and Laursen have had to give their dye away. "I know that our dye is better, but biologists and physicians don't. Therefore, we are giving the dye away to anyone that wants to perform a comparison test. Someone who needs to assess the health of sick people wouldn't dare to rely on an untested substance. Only when several researchers have shown triangulenium dyes to perform just as effectively as its predecessors can we hope for our substance to become more widely adopted," concludes Thomas Just S?rensen.

Knicks head coach Mike Woodson leads the franchise to first division title since 1994.

Mike Woodson, who led the Knicks to their first Atlantic Division title since 1994, finished third behind Denver's George Karl and Miami's Erik Spoelstra for NBA Coach of the Year.

Woodson received six first place votes to finish ahead of San Antonio's Gregg Popovich.

Indiana's Frank Vogel placed fifth while former Knick Mark Jackson finished seventh and former Knicks assistant Tom Thibodeau was eighth.

Pat Riley was the last Knicks coach to win the award in 1993.

Karl won the award for the first time. In Denver's second full season since trading Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets finished with a league-best 38-3 (.927) mark at home and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs.

They were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the first round. The Nuggets went 57-25 (.695) ? the league's fourth-best record ? despite beginning the season as the league's third-youngest team with an average age of 24.9 years, and not having a player score more than 16.7 points per game during the regular season.

The Knicks won 54 games under Woodson, the club's most since 1997.

The Coach of the Year Award is named after legendary coach and Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who guided the Celtics to nine NBA Championships. In 1996, Auerbach was honored as one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History as the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary.
