Microsoft announces Office 365 for Government, touts its fluffy cloud-based goodness

Microsoft announces cloud-based Office 365 for Government

Unlike certain folks who wear tinfoil hats Microsoft has no qualms working with the guv'ment. Having added Office 365 support to Windows Phone in its Mango update, the company is now turning its attention to a less tech-averse Uncle Sam with the introduction of the obviously named Office 365 for Government. According to Microsoft, this rendition of Office 365 places US government data in the soft embrace of the cloud via its own segregated community. Offerings featured with the service include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and Office Professional Plus. Now, you don't need to be wearing shiny, crumpled headwear to voice concerns about some evildoer messing around with government data on the cloud. Microsoft assures that the service supports the "most rigorous global and regional standards," including ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, EU Safe Harbor and FISMA. Given all the waist tightening Uncle Sam's being asked to go through recently, a cloud solution might actually sound appealing if it proves to be more cost-effective overall.

Sony's Next Generation Game Console To Still Have An Optical Disc ...

Sony has reporteddly rejected a download-only plan for its next videogame console, opting to include an optical disk drive, the Wall Street Journal reported today citing people familiar with the matter.

Although online networks play an importand role in the videogame industry, Sony will keep the optical disk drive in its next game console, while back there was a rumor going around saying the "PS4" would be a fully digital system with no support for physical media. The reason? A download-only model would not be succesfull as Internet connections are too inconsistent around the world, the WSJ added.

Sony is planning a 2013 release for the successor to its PlayStation 3 console, people familiar with the matter said.

The company is also expected to change some components of the upcoming console, such as the graphics chips, which will reportedly made by AMD, ending a long-running partnership with Nvidia. Sony's current PS3 machine is running on IBM/Toshiba Cell processor.

Microsoft is also planning to include an optical disk drive in the successor to its Xbox 360 console.

Both Sony's and Microsoft's people declined to comment.

New consoles are expected to be hot topic at the E3 videogame exposition in Los Angeles next week, though the only formal announcement expected is a successor for Nintendo 's Wii, the new Wii U.

Last year, Nintendo showacsed tech demos, This year the Japanese company will showcase actual games running on the new console. A post on the official Wii U Facebook page was just published, stating, "Guess what the initial game releases will be for Nintendo's new home console, Wii U? Soon we'll scratch off to reveal the names!"

Mumbai Grade A Office Rents To grow 1-2%, Delhi By 0-1% In Q2 ...

?Jones Lang LaSalle Issues Q2 Asia Pacific Office Rental Market Update

Mumbai Grade A Office Rents Expected To Grow 1-2%, Delhi By 0-1% In Q2

SINGAPORE, 31 May 2012 ? Jones Lang LaSalle?s Markets experts have shared their expectations for the office leasing markets in Asia Pacific in the second quarter of 2012. In those markets that were experiencing office rental declines in previous quarters, the Markets teams are anticipating a slowdown in the rate of decline, for example a three to four percent fall in Grade A office rents this quarter in Hong Kong compared to an actual 6.3 percent decline in the first quarter. Similarly, in Singapore a fall of three percent is anticipated by the end of the current quarter, compared to an actual 5.2 percent decline in Q1 2012.

Elsewhere in the region it is once again a mixed picture; the Jones Lang LaSalle Markets teams are predicting:

  • Some growth in Grade A office rents in Shanghai, Beijing, Jakarta, Manila, Mumbai and Delhi)
  • Grade A office rents to remain stable and show little movement in Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney and Melbourne
  • Some declines in Singapore and Hong Kong but at a slower pace than previous months; three percent and 3-4 percent respectively. A decline of around two percent is expected in Ho Chi Minh City.

Jeremy Sheldon, Managing Director, Markets Asia Pacific Jones Lang LaSalle commented: ?We continue to see the majority of Multi National Corporation?s across Asia Pacific adopt a ?wait and see? stance on expansion, given economic uncertainties, which is having a delay effect on their property decisions. This is translating into static rents in some markets, and smaller rental declines in others.

We are finding those landlords who can afford to ?sit? are doing so, thus holding fairly firm on asking rents. This is resulting in stability in rents for now. Of course each market has very different dynamics, and the one market which stands out again this quarter in terms of the rental growth is Jakarta. The demand for space from companies as a result of the very healthy economic outlook in Indonesia is creating activity in all sectors and locations in Jakarta.

For the second half of the year, the economic frailties of the Eurozone and a hard versus soft landing in China will be the determining factor on overall office take-up in the region. However, as inter-regional trade continues to grow and domestic Asian companies perform, we remain positive for the full year.?

?Anuj Puri, Chairman & Country Head, Jones Lang LaSalle India, states: ?With the Indian financial economy?s cues not being very encouraging, office occupiers continue to defer expansion plans across major Indian cities. The trend of slowdown in growth of office rentals witnessed in Q1 across Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore continues in Q2. Given the pressure, we expect rentals to remain stable for most micro-markets.

Mumbai and Delhi are expected to add significant office supply over the next six quarters, and we have started seeing increasing signs of delayed construction. The next two quarters will decide if the supply side can appropriately accommodate the demand slowdown. However, on a macro scale, the Indian office asset story remains on a positive trajectory as compared to most Asia Pacific office markets.?

Market overviews:

  • Beijing: Grade A office rents expected to grow c. five percent in Q2. Companies are looking at more creative ways to fit more people in their current space and overall rental increases are being impacted by deals being agreed with rental caps in place. If these rental caps were not being offered, the rental increase would most likely be higher. Nonetheless, the lack of Grade A office supply should support rents in the foreseeable future.
  • Delhi: Grade A office rents expected to grow 0 ? 1 percent in Q2. Companies are expected to remain interested in office space in the SBD (Secondary Business Districts), though the suburbs will continue to offer competitive rents, thus providing an alternative location to firms looking for new office space.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: Grade A office rents expected to decline c. two percent in Q2. We can see signs of accelerating rental declines in the second quarter as some new developments have started pre-leasing with competitive offers. The two newest Grade A buildings in the city continue to face downward pressures in rents due to high vacancy levels, although moderate leasing activity should help to limit rental declines. More mature Grade A buildings should continue to maintain healthy occupancy levels and more stable rents.
  • Hong Kong: Grade A office rents expected to decline 3-4 percent in Q2. Limited demand at the top end of the Grade A market is maintaining pressure on rents. There is limited new leasing activity from larger firms in Central, although we are still seeing some smaller new market entries focusing on buildings with smaller floor plates. There is limited relocation activity, mainly focused on lower cost buildings within the same district.
  • Jakarta: Grade A office rents expected to grow 7-9 percent in Q2. We are expecting a similar level of take-up of space compared with Q2 last year and pre-commitment levels continue to increase in upcoming projects. As Grade A vacancy continues to fall to below three percent some firms are being forced to Grade B space.
  • Manila: Grade A office rents expected to grow c. two percent in Q2. Take-up is expected to improve as companies are starting to pre-commit to space in office developments again. New demand is coming from the space requirements of a few large MNCs that are choosing to consolidate their global back-office operations to the Philippines. Rental growth is being supported by sustained demand, especially from the offshoring and outsourcing sector.
  • Melbourne: Grade A office rents expected to remain stable in Q2. We are currently seeing lower enquiry levels compared with previous quarters and leasing decisions are taking more time. Large tenants (with requirements larger than 3,000 sq. m) are investigating the suitability of activity based working (ABW) models.
  • Mumbai: Grade A office rents expected to grow 1-2 percent in Q2. We expect only marginal rental increase in 2Q12. Developers are likely to refrain from increasing rents to encourage occupiers to finalize transactions that have been on hold for some time (due to caution amongst corporates generally) and also given the high vacancy rates in suburban markets.
  • Seoul: Grade A office rents expected to remain stable in Q2. There is sustained demand from domestic firms, particularly in some recently completed CBD buildings, but lower levels of enquiries from Multi-National Corporations (MNCs); some relocations are being postponed/cancelled and a small number of MNCs are handing back some space. We expect CBD rentals to reach the bottom of the cycle this year, but rental gains in the CBD are unlikely until next year due to further new supply additions and space coming back onto the market in some buildings as tenants move out.
  • Shanghai: Grade A office rents expected to grow 2-3 percent in Q2. Although many tenants still remain conservative in regard to expansion plans, leasing market sentiment is starting to improve as evidenced by higher levels of enquiries and tenant interest. In addition the tight supply situation in the core CBD area is also supporting moderate rental growth.
  • Singapore: Grade A office rents expected to decline c. three percent in Q2, less than in the first quarter of the year. Rentals are mostly taking place in new buildings, but there have been very few transactions in the current quarter to date. Landlords of buildings with high occupancy levels remain firm on their rents, which is why we are projecting only minor declines in Grade A rents this quarter. Headcounts remain stable but many companies are adopting a ?wait and see? approach towards leasing decisions which is equating to sluggish new demand, particularly amongst large financial services firms.
  • Sydney: Grade A office rents expected to remain stable in Q2. Sentiment is being impacted by on-going delays in the completion of larger leasing deals, coupled with less relocation demand. Owners are more willing to increase incentives in order to attract or retain tenants. Limited new supply in 2012 should support rental growth, though the impact is yet to be reflected in rents.
  • Tokyo: Grade A office rents expected to remain stable in Q2. Companies continue to prefer buildings with good earthquake protection, so this ?flight to quality and safety? is supporting demand for Grade A office buildings in prime locations, and consequently Grade A vacancy is falling slightly. This desire for Grade A space is also helping to buoy demand for new developments due for completion this year, though it is resulting higher vacancies in the wider office market

Blowing in the wind: How hidden flower features are crucial for bees

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

As gardeners get busy filling tubs and borders with colourful bedding plants, scientists at the Universities of Cambridge and Bristol have discovered more about what makes flowers attractive to bees rather than humans. Published today in the British Ecological Society's journal Functional Ecology, their research reveals that Velcro-like cells on plant petals play a crucial role in helping bees grip flowers ? especially when the wind gets up.

The study focuses on special cells found on the surface of petals, whose stunning structure is best seen under an electron microscope. According to lead author, Dr Beverley Glover: "Many of our common garden flowers have beautiful conical cells if you look closely ? roses have rounded conical petal cells while petunias have really long cells, giving petunia flowers an almost velvety appearance, particularly visible in the dark-coloured varieties."

Glover's group previously discovered that when offered snapdragons with conical cells and a mutant variety without these cells, bees prefer the former because the conical cells help them grip the flower. "It's a bit like Velcro, with the bee claws locking into the gaps between the cells," she explains.

Compared with many garden flowers, however, snapdragons have very complicated flowers; bees have to land on a vertical face and pull open a heavy lip to reach the nectar so Glover was not surprised that grip helps. But she wanted to discover how conical cells help bees visiting much simpler flowers.

"Many of our garden flowers like petunias, roses and poppies are very simple saucers with nectar in the bottom, so we wanted to find out why having conical cells to provide grip would be useful for bees landing on these flowers. We hypothesised that maybe the grip helped when the flowers blow in the wind."

Using two types of petunia, one with conical cells and a mutant line with flat cells, Glover let a group of bumblebees that had never seen petunias before forage in a large box containing both types of flower, and discovered they too preferred the conical-celled flowers.

They then devised a way of mimicking the way flowers move in the wind. "We used a lab shaking platform that we normally use to mix liquids, and put the flowers on that. As we increased the speed of shaking, mimicking increased wind speed, the bees increased their preference for the conical-celled flowers," she says.

The results, Glover says, give ecologists a deeper insight into the extraordinarily subtle interaction between plant and pollinator. "Nobody knew what these cells were for, and now we have a good answer that works for pretty much all flowers," she concludes. "It's is too easy to look at flowers from a human perspective, but when you put yourself into the bee's shoes you find hidden features of flowers can be crucial to foraging success."

(AP) ? Crowds gathered along San Francisco's waterfront Sunday, while San Francisco Bay was crowded with pleasure boats, tug boats and other vessels as the city celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Tens of thousands of people were expected to flock to the area to enjoy a number of events taking place along a section of waterfront stretching from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero.

At least several thousand people had gathered along the waterfront by Sunday afternoon, said Mary Currie, public affairs director for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.

"Everyone is biking and walking and looks very happy," she said. "We're off to a great start."

San Francisco resident Daniel Sutphin and his family were among those in the crowd enjoying the day and the views of the bridge.

"It's such an iconic structure, depending on the day or the hour, it just looks like it changes continuously," Sutphin said as he walked through the Fort Point area with his wife and their three young children.

Since it opened in 1937, more than two-billion vehicles have crossed the 1.7-mile-long bridge named after the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance of water to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, and championed by engineer Joseph Strauss in the 1920s.

Because of the crowds expected and with no parking available near the bridge, officials were urging people to take mass transit to the events.

The California Highway Patrol was planning on shutting down traffic across the bridge from 9 p.m. through 10 p.m. for a monumental fireworks display set to take place over the bridge.

In a stark contrast to the thousands of celebrants, members of the group the Bridge Rail Foundation, an organization dedicated to stopping suicide jumps from the bridge, erected a display of 1,558 pairs of shoes, representing the number of people who died in leaps form the bridge since it opened in 1937.

"It's a symbol of how deep and serious this problem has been," said Paul Muller, a spokesman for the group. "We're still losing 30 to 35 a people a year off the bridge," he said.

Meanwhile on the water, Golden Gate ferries were running again after a one-day strike disrupted service across San Francisco Bay on Saturday.

Workers represented by the Inlandboatmen's Union walked off the job on a day strike, forcing the cancellation of ferries operated by Golden Gate between Larkspur, Sausalito and San Francisco.

The strike was called after nearly a year of negotiations over workloads and other matters, said Marina Secchitano, the union's regional director.

California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement Saturday evening, saying that he was appointing a board to investigate the strike, which, he claimed, created a disruption to public service.

Secchitano disputed the governor's claim, questioning the motivation to call for an investigation after a one-day strike. "(This is) an action to try to silence us," she said.

"They're counting on this process to back our membership off the issue," she said.

Ferry and union officials said service resumed Sunday when workers returned to work.

Best Kids Parties: Garden Tea Party My Party | Apartment Therapy

Name: Genevieve (4)
Location: U.S.

My leaning toward natural parenting means that I am always focused on simplicity and environmental stewardship when it comes to family events and my children's milestones. This year at Genevieve's fourth birthday is the first time we have elected to throw her a party, wanting the party to be her idea and about what she wants as opposed to us. It was a great success!

We used her imagination to guide us in making the cake (a Spiderman cookie cake made from scratch!), the decorations (a few flowery paper plates and napkins, and mylar balloons from the dollar store) and in selecting the party theme. She loves having afternoon tea parties, so the party theme was a "Garden Tea Party," complete with pink lemonade and outdoor activities. The first activity was to decorate pots from the dollar store and replant tomato seedlings in them. The girls relished the chance to get dirty!

After we cleaned up, we moved onto the second activity, which was originally going to be butterfly catching in our nearby woods, but due to cool weather we decided to keep the kids indoors and did dot art paintings instead. This ended up being a great activity that didn't require much parental assistance, allowing the adults to chat and eat chips and dip. Because the party was held in the afternoon from 2 to 4 pm, we had a selection of soft drinks and hors d'ouvres but no need for large food dishes. The party took place on Cinco de Mayo, giving us an easy idea for the hors d'ouvres: chips, salsa, and guacamole!

We chose not to make gift-opening a large part of the occasion. I spoke with parents ahead of time, alerting them to our desire not to have large gifts, both for their sake and ours. Guests brought a small trinket, allowing the children the chance to learn to share but not contributing to the overwhelming amount of junk typically present at children's birthdays.

The same philosophy applied to the party favors. We gave the kids butterfly nets (from the dollar store; originally for the second activity) and let them take their tomato seedlings home. The parents seemed happy and relieved to have the plants rather than more temporary tattoos, play doh, and noise-makers.

I Don't Stay Home, But My Husband Works Hard | Toddler Times

birthday 300x200 99.9% of Fathers Work Hard

My handsome & hard-working man. I hope my son grows up to be just like him.

I?d like to think that I?ve come a long way as a working momma, from someone who was miserable & sick over leaving her son to a gal who enjoys her day & job.?Being in a job where working mommas are normal & there no archaic people asking me why I ?don?t want to be home with my baby? helps, too.

I roll my eyes when people insinuate that someone else is raising my baby, because I?m pretty darn sure it was me?tucking him back into bed at 4am?the other morning.? I let it roll off my back when someone tells me to ?prioritize? to stay home with my family, when the priorities we set are the reason I work ? it?s how we want to raise our family.? Children are dying of starvation, so let?s not worry about the 8 hours my child spends in the watchful & fun care of his daycare.

But I have to admit that there is still one phrase that burns the butter on my biscuit.

?My husband works hard so that I can stay home.?

You know, or something like that.

I get it, really.? Your husband DOES work hard & you are proud of him, thankful, & you should be!? I think it is wonderful when a family goal is to have a stay-at-home mother & the husband?s job affords that plan.? I also love to hear women build up their men.? I?m an old-fashioned sap like that.? If you can?t be nice about your spouse, who can you be nice about?

But when I see it used on Facebook updates that say something to the effect of, ?I have the best job in the world ? mommy! So glad I have a husband that works so hard so I can be at home with our children!??well, it puts me in HULK SMASH defensive mode because sounds like ?SMUG ALERT 5000!? I think my husband is a better man than yours! You don?t stay home because your husband is a bum!?? I feel the need to defend the honor of my man, who also works hard but who?s company doesn?t offer benefits.? Who earns salary, so overtime is not an option.

Here?s the deal ? unless your baby daddy is a crack-smoking K-Fed wannabe that lays on the couch all day, your partner works hard.? Whether he makes minimum wage sorting mail or is a partner in a law firm making six figures, that man is working for his family & deserves to be praised.

p.s. doug, thank you for working hard for our family.? not only are you devilishly handsome & good in bed, but i?m proud of you!
p.p.s. this is my personal burned biscuit & my personal butter. you may internalize those phrases differently & hey! that?s cool!? different flavored biscuits for everyone!

Electric Daisy Carnival Headliners Avicii, Steve Angello Bring Mayhem To New York

'New York City, tonight, electronic dance music won the Super Bowl,' Swedish House Mafia's Angello tells the crowd.
By Nicholas Philippou

Armin van Buuren at Electric Daisy Carnival New York

A different breed of giants owned MetLife Stadium on Saturday during day two of New York's inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival. Armin van Buuren, Avicii and Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello closed the day's festivities under a sea of red, white and gold fireworks, after taking an estimated 60,000 fans for an unforgettable ride.

"We put a nightclub in Giants stadium," Angello proudly told the crowd during EDC's closing moments. "New York City, tonight, electronic dance music won the Superbowl."

Angello reveled in the moment and called the night "historic," after delivering a two-hour set that evolved from dark and dirty to euphoric, ending with Angello in the spotlight, arms wide open, nearly hugging the crowd during SHM's remix of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall." SHM fans got their serving with classics like "Greyhound" and "One" as well as the revved-up Knife Party remix of "Save the World" that capped the night's exhilaration.

Thomas Gold was Steve Angello's Eli Manning inside the stadium, where Size Matters took over the end zone. Gold had one of those days where it was like he couldn't miss, from the moment he hit the stage he turned the red zone into the Gold zone for two hours.

He fired off a monster set with his remix of Miike Snow's "The Wave" and rode on a high-energy, song-switching filter-fest of songs we all love, but have never heard quite like this before. Gold played up the Police's "Message In a Bottle," against his track "Abart," with Leventina's "We're Gonna Start," followed up with a mash-up of "Agora" and Avicii's "Le7els" in what was a fun, feel-good set that scratched every itch.

Outside of the stadium, at the Kinetic Field, Alesso and SHM's Sebastian Ingrosso both killed it with amazing sets, with Alesso even making a return trip to the stage when Seb cued up their smash hit, "Calling," while the huge crowd hummed out the chorus. Ingrosso played up every element of his show, leveling the crowd with a mash-up of SHM's "One" against Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," while a giant eye familiar to SHM fans stared back at them, creating a definite feeling of surreal, a reoccurring sensation throughout the festivities.

And a surreal experience is really what EDC is all about. It's a costume party, a rave, a carnival, an amusement park, a concert and a madhouse in whatever direction you turn. Wherever you were, you were most definitely entertained.

Were you at New York's Electric Daisy Carnival? What did you think? Leave your comment below!

Best Practices for Coauthoring Legal Scholarship

I am coauthoring two of my current works in progress, which has caused me to do some thinking about the process of coauthoring.? Obviously every project is different, but I am interested to know whether others think that there are universal best practices for successfully coauthoring legal scholarship.? I'm also interested in insights about coauthoring in other fields, although legal scholarship has certain unique conventions of structure and citation that might differentiate it from other areas.

Others have written on this topic on PrawfsBlawg before.? I'll add a few tentative thoughts of my own:

I think it's important to identify a project that will work well as a coauthored endeavor.? I tend to think that the most successful coauthored projects are those that none of the authors could have written (or written as well) on her own.? I'm currently collaborating with Professor Charlotte Garden (Seattle) on a project about the ways in which the interests of labor unions and racial minorities converge, and how leaders in both movements might harness that coalition of interests to facilitate social change.? It's obvious that the collaboration makes sense:? it builds on both Professor Garden's previous scholarship regarding labor unions and the political process (here and here) and my previous work regarding racial equality (here and here).? More importantly, though, this isn't a paper I could write nearly as well alone, because I don't have the breadth and depth of knowledge regarding labor law and unions to make the most of the parallels to racial equality interests.

Relatedly, in my view it's important to have a relatively clear division of labor.? In this collaboration, we've both read in one another's fields in preparation for writing the paper and passed an outline back and forth to make sure we have a meeting of the minds on the contours of the argument.? But in terms of the initial drafting, we've mostly divided the piece so that we're each writing the sections that fall within our own areas of expertise.? Part of this is pure efficiency, and part of it is the recognition that we're each more fluent within our own field.

Finally, I'd argue that the paper should read as a unified, organic work of scholarship.? One issue I've observed in certain coauthored pieces is that it's relatively easy to tell which author wrote which sections.? While there's nothing intrinsically wrong with this, I think true coauthorship should involve exchanging and editing one another's work so that the piece presents a unified vision and speaks with a unified voice.? Ideally the piece should simultaneously sound like both of you.? I think this is much more easily said than done, but it's certainly something to aspire to.

I also have a few thoughts about coauthoring specifically with students (see here for additional thoughts on the issue).? I think that this sort of coauthoring relationship can be uniquely valuable.? It often presents an opportunity to work on a project that for some reason isn't feasible to do singlehandedly.? For example, I recently published an article called The Persistent Gender Disparity in Student Note Publication with my former student Jennifer Mullins (American), who now teaches legal writing.? The paper involved accumulation and analysis of a database of nearly six thousand student notes published at fifty schools over the course of a decade, as well as qualitative surveys of law review editors and student note authors.? It would have been very difficult for me to gather and organize the data alone, and my coauthor was incredibly helpful in managing and making sense of a huge amount of information.? Also, given our topic, I felt it was particularly helpful to work with someone who had been a member of a student-run journal more recently than I had.? And while I don't want to speak for my coauthor, I hope that the publication of the article was of some professional value to her as well as of some value in terms of learning about the writing and submissions process.

I'm currently continuing the endeavor of coauthoring with students, having begun work with my wonderful student Kira Suyeishi on an article regarding the use of written consent forms for Fourth Amendment searches.? Kira has already made a unique contribution to the project by undertaking a fifty-state empirical survey of the use of consent forms.

In general, I highly recommend collaborating with students.? It provides an opportunity for mentorship; it allows you to undertake a project you otherwise might not; it earns the student a credential that may be useful in their future endeavors; it allows you to share your knowledge about the process of creating and publishing scholarship, and even more importantly, your enthusiasm about that process; and it's also rewarding and fun.

Finally, a few logistical thoughts.? With students in particular (but with other coauthors as well) I think it's often useful to map out a schedule with rough deadlines for completing and swapping sections.? This helps both parties balance the collaboration with their other commitments.? For instance, I have a shared google calendar with each of my current coauthors in which we've plotted tentative deadlines for various aspects of the project.? And in terms of document control, I highly recommend Dropbox, which allows easy file sharing and editing.

I welcome others' thoughts and advice about coauthoring.

A friend recently asked for my advice about co-authoring articles. I recently co-authored two articles with some success. (For those class action fans, see Adam S. Zimmerman & David M. Jaros, The Criminal Class Action, 159 U. Pa. 1385 (2011) and Michael D. Sant'Ambrogio & Adam S. Zimmerman, The Agency Class Action, 112 Colum. L. Rev. _ (forthcoming 2012)). For what it's worth, here were my recommendations, some of which overlap substantially with Nancy's.

First, set out a day to just meet and talk about the piece over coffee or lunch. Plan for a long talk, to discuss not only the idea, but the potential counter-arguments and objections one might raise to the idea.

Second, as you talk, it may be helpful to bring a pad of notebook paper ? or, if you have an office and a whiteboard, a big marker ? just to sketch out how the arguments and counter arguments would flow in a paper. You don?t need to formally outline your argument in that first talk, it?s very early, but it?s important to get a sense about what kinds of topics your article will cover and to refine some of those ideas together.

Third, one or both of you should go home and within a day or two, try to reduce those ideas to an outline of an argument. It need only be a rough sketch, so that when you next talk, you can discuss the kinds of topics each of you plan to research, prefer to write about and so on. You, for example, might like to take on the history portion of your piece, your friend the theory, and both of you might want to break up the counter arguments. But you need that outline first, to make sure both of you have a game plan for moving ahead.

Fourth, meet again over coffee, or if you are working at a long distance, over Skype. The face-to-face interaction helps. Work over that outline together. Sketch out in more detail the narrative arch of the paper.

Fifth, having settled on that outline, lay out a realistic schedule for talking about the research that you uncover for each respective section of the piece. Talking through the research, I find, is really nice. You can set a schedule to talk about your progress once or twice a week. You also will find that, together, you will identify needed sources faster, and you may each identify friends who can identify other research avenues early on. Email them for help. Some of those friends may be good readers for you down the road, so it?s nice to get into contact with them early.

Sixth, try not to research for too long before beginning your writing?you?re going to end up continuing to research as you write anyway and research can easily lapse into procrastination and lost momentum between two parties?and lay out a plan for writing sections out and exchanging your writing. (I like to write a substantial subsection ? say 6 pages or so ? every other week.) Use deadlines with each other to keep each other on target. Working together, a working draft of an article on this schedule is not only really manageable, but something that can be put together more quickly than you'd imagine.

Seventh, once you have that working draft, take time to each read the piece as a whole to smooth out any differences in writing style, typos, awkward constructions, or unclear ideas. We would typically read the papers apart for a few days, then get together in an office, and line-edit the piece together to speed things along. I actually liked writing in the same room, or over Skype, but I know everyone has their own style for this. I agree that it's important to make a piece sound like it?s written in a univocal way and to smooth out the rough transitions that inevitably can occur with a second author. Take no more than a few days to make cosmetic changes. Should you discover there are some substantive points, or holes exist in the paper ? and you will because two heads are better than one about these things ? make a point to set clear boundaries and deadlines for any follow up writing or work.

Eighth, don?t spend more than a short amount of time on number six, before sending out your article to readers. Make a list between the two of you of who you know and want to read the paper, and who you hope will read your paper. Then, break out the work of emailing it out. In an ideal setting, you would send out your article by early to mid-July, if you wanted to do a September 1 submission. Otherwise, no rush for the Spring. But send it, even if you both still think there?s more work to be done. Your readers will likely identify more research avenues for you both to consider anyway.

That's all I have. In sum, I have really enjoyed co-authoring pieces, in part, because the writing moves along much faster and because you can work through difficult concepts with a reliable audience?your writing partner. It?s also less lonesome and more fun talking through ideas with a partner who shares your enthusiasm for the project.

Notorious 1980s drug dealer arrested in New York

NEW YORK (AP) ? A notorious drug dealer who got his start during the crack epidemic of the 1980s and was so good at hiding his whereabouts that he was known as "the ghost" has been arrested along with dozens of others on new charges, police and prosecutors said Thursday.

James Corley, 51, was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and other drug charges after a 15-month undercover investigation that used wiretaps and surveillance, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Forty-four other people were also charged with drug crimes in the dismantling of Corley's operation, known as the Supreme Team, and another drug gang, authorities said.

Corley supplied cocaine to a second gang called the South Side Bloods, and low-level dealers grossed about $15,000 a week in drug sales, Kelly said. Burned by a wiretap before, Corley used at least eight different phones, authorities said.

"He had an uncanny ability to keep his associates in the dark. No one knew where he lived, what phone number he used, what car he drove," Kelly said.

A call to Corley's lawyer wasn't immediately returned Thursday.

The case was pieced together by Detective David Leonardi, who said the dealers used a language called the "5 percenter" where every number and letter had its own word and members decoded messages about drug orders. The wiretaps also netted information on illegal guns and a possible killing in South Carolina.

Corley came of age during the crack era of the late 1980s and was an associate of the Supreme Team, which controlled housing projects and corners in Queens, the ground zero of the crack epidemic in New York. Crime was rampant; in 1990, the number of murders hit an all-time high of 2,245.

The Supreme Team was run by legendary gang leader Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, who reputedly funneled drug money into rap music label Murder Inc. He's now serving life without parole for a pair of murders after a 2007 conviction.

It was a brutal drug gang that came out of the same Queens streets where platinum rappers 50 Cent and Ja Rule emerged years later. At its peak, the Supreme Team's network of dealers was making $200,000 a day, authorities said.

After McGriff did jail time on a drug conviction, he was released in 1997 and aligned himself with neighborhood friend and music mogul Irv "Gotti" Lorenzo. The one-time street thugs produced one film: "Crime Partners," a straight-to-video affair that featured Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg and Ice-T.

The Supreme Team was responsible for the shooting of NYPD Officer Edward Byrne in 1988, authorities said, but Corley wasn't charged in that killing. He was jailed once in the 1980s on drug charges, and was later convicted of manslaughter for beating to death a man he believed to be a police informant, and served more than three years, police said.

New York Police Department Capt. James Ryan said the takedown this week finally signaled the end of the remnants of the team that had terrorized Queens for decades.

"We feel it's pretty much dismantled now with Corley being taken out of the picture," he said. "It remains to be seen, we're always vigilant and we think this is the end of them."

A Letter to a Long-Lost Friend Pays Off | FamilyTreeUniversity.com

The Combs family cousins, about 1955, Washington, Ind.

Where I am from, everyone knows everyone else. I am pretty sure in my mother?s home county everyone is all related in some way, unless you are a foreigner (i.e. not born there). As you can imagine trees merge, intermingle, and sometime collide right into each other. This leads to people you never even thought about being in your family tree turning into cousins. Just so you all know, I think my parents merged the only two families in two counties that were not linked yet; or at least as far as I know.

I can remember a nice woman who was a teacher friend to my dad?s mom. My Grandma Combs was Miss Hilbert?s mentor and they became lifelong friends. They traveled together, worked together, and were in many of the same organizations. I even had Miss Hilbert as a substitute teacher a couple times when I was in first and second grades.

Then one summer Miss. Hilbert was at a Sanders family reunion that I went to with my mother?s mother. What was she doing there? Well, it turns out that Miss. Hilbert?s mother and my Grandma Arvin?s mother were sisters; both Sanders girls. That was when I started paying closer attention to exactly who came and went from family reunions over the next few years (as well as whether that cute boy I was making summer-crush-eyes at was a cousin too).

Miss. Hilbert had been a keeper of most of the family history for that side of the family. She never married, but she has always been diligent on keeping the family (now families) together and informed. A few weeks ago I ran across some old newsletter articles she wrote for the now defunct Arvin-Armstrong newsletter (we have an online group now) and wondered if she could still be alive. If she was I know she would be able to help me a lot with this research. Time was of the essence, as she had to be nearing ninety.

I have not been home to a family reunion since we left Indiana almost six years ago. Many things conspired against a trip home, but I am doing my best to make the 14 hour drive back this fall. I had not heard that Miss. Hilbert had died, so using some of the sleuthing techniques on finding living relatives I was taught through a Family Tree University course, I went to work.

I found her.

Using nice stationary, I hand-wrote a letter to her re-introducing myself, letting her know that I have taken up researching the family history and that I would love to correspond with her. That was the middle of March. In the second week of May I got a reply, and I had found the correct Miss Hilbert. She caught me up on her family, told me about how the Loogootee boys? basketball team won state in their division this year, and how she knew both of my grandmothers.

The best part: She sent me a photocopy of an index ?Mother Alford Sanders? had written listing the Sander?s parental lineage for three generations.

The page states:

G. Grandmother Wildman name

was St. Clair Burton

G. Grandmother Sanders

name was Gamble

Grandmother Wildman

name Mary Francis Moberly

died April 30 1864

Grandmother Sanders

Name Elizabeth Denning

Born May 27 1827 Died June 13 1880

Grandfather Armstead Wildman

Born Dec 6 1829 Died Mar 15 1900

Grandfather James Sanders

Born Sept 8 1829 Died Jan 30 1913

Aunt Ann Sanders died

Sept 22 1937 Wednesday 6.30 O Clock

Thankfully, it confirms some of the research I have done (or at least gives me another source), but it also gives me some more mysteries to chase. I am going to have to write her back and ask who the writer is. Alford is one of the names that have been in the area for a long time, and I am going to make the assumption that one of her uncles married an Alford. The question is which one? Also, who was Ann? It is a name I had not heard before and do not have in any of my records. The last question I am going to ask is: when was this written? There is neither a date on the page nor identification.

It always seems that there is always a mystery to solve or a name to chase with each new piece of evidence that lands in my lap. The thrill of the chase, as it were.

health & fitness: How To Find Affordable Health Care?

Decades ago, people from developing countries used to travel to U.S.A and Europe looking for advanced healthcare that was not available in their home countries. The treatment that they received in U.S.A and Europe was every expensive and only the wealthy patients could afford to travel to these countries for medical care. However, things have changed drastically. Every year now, a few hundred thousand people from the Western countries, such as U.S.A and U.K, travel to developing nations such as India, Thailand and Costa Rica to avail world-class medical facilities at an affordable cost. Popularly known as Medical tourism, the practice of traveling abroad to avail healthcare has now grown into a safe, affordable and enjoyable practice.

The rising costs of healthcare in the developed nations impel a huge number of people, now popularly termed as Medical Tourists, to scout for locations in the less developed parts of the world for medical treatments such as dental implants, knee surgery and bariatric surgery. An article published on the financial page of The New Yorker on April 16th, 2012 states that the Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok treats four hundred thousand foreign patients annually. Malaysia receives about six hundred thousand medical tourists last year, while South Korea plays host to more than a hundred thousand medical tourists, nearly a third of them American.

The attraction to look for affordable healthcare in developing nations such as India, Malaysia, Turkey, Thailand and Costa Rica is quite obvious. Not only are the costs of medical facilities only a fraction of the cost of similar medical facilities in the U.S.A, the quality of healthcare provided by these countries has improved tremendously in the last few years. The presence of internationally accredited hospitals in these countries that offer similar technical facilities as offered in American hospitals is an added attraction for medical tourists. Many companies who connect the patients in Western countries to hospitals and reliable doctors in other parts of the world make medical tourism easier and more dependable for people.

Finding affordable healthcare outside one's home country has become easy because of the abundance of information and resources now available on the medical tourism industry. It is also convenient to connect via forums on the internet with other people who have availed similar medical treatments in foreign locales. Many reliable agencies and companies offer services where they ascertain your needs and locate the country where you will receive high quality medical care at low-cost.

Over 50 countries around the world, especially the developing nations, count medical tourism as their national industry. However, the safety, quality and reliability of medical facilities offered vary from one country to another. Some of the most popular countries that offer low-cost, yet world-class medical facilities to the medical tourists are India, Costa Rica, Mexico, China, Thailand, Turkey, Hungary, Pakistan, Philippines and Taiwan. More and more Americans now prefer to travel a short distance to Mexico for medical treatments such as advanced dental treatments. For instance, getting dental implants in Los Algodones, Mexico is much cheaper than getting the same dental procedure done in the U.S. In the same way, India is a preferred destination for various kinds of surgeries such as knee surgery, cardiac surgery, bone marrow transplant and orthopedic surgery.

Since the healthcare costs in the U.S.A and the European Union are on the rise, the trend to travel internationally to look for affordable healthcare is likely to stay strong.

(AP) ? A midday bombing that killed two bodyguards of an archconservative former interior minister and injured at least 39 people in a busy commercial district of Bogota has raised fears that violence not seen in the Colombian capital in years could return.

Former Interior Minister Fernando Londono, 68, had glass shards removed from his chest and was out of danger, authorities said.

But the ex-minister's driver and another bodyguard were killed almost instantly. Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro said a pedestrian attached an explosive to a door of Londono's armored SUV and set it off remotely.

Authorities said they had video of Tuesday's attack and Petro said the culprit "walked away disguised." A wig of long black hair and a hat were found nearby.

It was the first fatal bombing of an apparently political nature in the capital in nearly a decade and it traumatized a capital that two decades earlier was ravaged by car bombs set off by drug traffickers fighting extradition to the United States.

Speculation was widespread that the country's main leftist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was to blame. But President Juan Manuel Santos said it was too early to assign blame, and announced a $277,000 reward for information leading to those responsible.

"We don't know who is behind this attack," he said after meeting with police and military brass, Bogota's mayor and the chief prosecutor. The FARC was behind a car bomb, however, that was detected and deactivated elsewhere in the capital earlier Tuesday, he said.

Santos, who as defense minister in 2006-2009 dealt major setbacks to the rebels, said Londono had in the past received death threats and had about 19 bodyguards.

A stringent critic of the FARC, Londono was interior and justice minister in 2002-2003 under former President Alvaro Uribe.

He hosts a daily radio show called "The Hour of Truth" and firmly opposes peace talks with the FARC, calling the rebels "terrorists" and "murderers."

He has also been critical of Santos for allegedly being soft on the rebels, who have stepped up attacks in recent months.

Under Uribe, Colombia's U.S.-backed military diminished the FARC by roughly half to about 9,000 fighters. Colombia's capital became progressively safer as the conflict was pushed to less populated hinterlands.

The last major bombing in Bogota, in 2003, devastated the exclusive El Nogal social club, killing 36 people. The cocaine trade-funded FARC was blamed, as it was for a pre-dawn bombing outside a building housing Caracol radio in August 2010 that injured nine people.

The district rocked by Tuesday's blast is packed with offices, stores, restaurants and banks, and video of the scene after the blast showed people screaming as police and firefighters assisted the wounded, some with bloodied faces.

Santos said 39 people were injured.

Londono was operated on at the Clinica del Country hospital to close skin wounds and remove glass shards from his chest, said the hospital's director, Jorge Ospina.

The only person seriously injured in the blast was a 38-year-old passer-by in danger of losing his right arm, Ospina said.

Earlier Tuesday, police said they had deactivated a car bomb in a Renault 9 whose trunk contained Indugel, a gelatinous explosive made by Colombia's military.

Santos said its target was apparently a police station in a neighborhood named for his great uncle, former President Eduardo Santos. The driver, who was arrested, "made a series of confessions," he said, that suggested the FARC was to blame.

Santos considers himself a progressive and, in addition to a military hard line against the FARC, has sought to return stolen land to peasants and pay reparations to victims of Colombia's long-running civil conflict.

Analyst Leon Valencia of the Nuevo Arco Iris think tank said the FARC was fully capable of Tuesday's attack but said groups from the extreme right opposed to peace talks proposed by the FARC should not be ruled out.

Leftist congressman and human rights activist Ivan Cepeda said he feared the attack could trigger other acts of violence, including targeting the left.

"I see a clear intent to destabilize," Cepeda said, blaming "sectors who don't want peace."

Political scientist Vicente Torrijos of the Universidad del Rosario supported the theory that the FARC was to blame as it "seeks to show itself to the world as an organization sufficiently strong militarily and not only a weak organization that is only looking to negotiate with the government."

The FARC last month released what it said were its last "political prisoners," 10 police officers and soldiers held for as many as 14 years.

In newspaper columns and on the radio, Londono hasn't just attacked the FARC as the standard-bearer of Colombia's left wing.

He has also firmly defended Uribe against allegations that the former president was too cozy with backers of illegal far-right militias. Dozens of political allies of both men have been imprisoned on criminal conspiracy convictions for colluding with the militias.

The far-right militia leaders made peace with Uribe's 2002-2010 government but most of their top leaders were extradited to the United States, where they are in prison on drug trafficking convictions.

he FARC continue to inflict casualties on security forces in ambushes and hit-and-run attacks.

It currently holds a French journalist who was accompanying security forces on a drug lab-destroying mission when rebels detained him two weeks ago. The FARC said on Sunday that it intends to free him soon.
