HP appoints Bill Veghte as chief strategy officer, will lead 'cloud and webOS open source initiatives'

Bill Veghte was already having his checks cut by HP (after cutting ties with Microsoft), but now he'll be filling a slightly different corner office. The company today announced that he has been appointed chief strategy officer, but somehow, he'll also have enough time to hold onto his current role as executive vice president of HP Software. We're told that he'll be working with HP's senior business and technology brass in order to innovate in ways that perhaps it hasn't lately, with newly-appointed CEO Meg Whitman saying the following: "Every 10 to 15 years, fundamental shifts occur in the IT industry that redefine how technology is delivered. From mainframes to client/server to the internet, companies that identified the opportunity first and developed the right strategy came out on top. As we move forward, HP intends to stay on top, and I believe Bill has the knowledge and vision to keep us there." Strangely, the release (embedded in full after the break) mentions that Bill will be leading HP's "cloud and webOS open source initiatives," but it fails to elaborate on what exactly those "initiatives" may be.

Pink Samsung Galaxy S II makes UK bow on cupid's bow, is the new Godiva

Pretty in pink, isn't it?! Sammy's already slapped a bit of rouge on the casing of its über-popular Galaxy S II for denizens of South Korea, making that special edition available for coloristas last November. But in an effort to share the "love," synchronize with a certain money-milking, greeting card holiday and maximize profits, the company's releasing this precious-hued wünderphone to our cousins across the pond on Phones4u and Very. Arriving just in time for you Brits to tell that special someone in your life, "I spent a few hundred pounds on this silly phone and I'm made of money, so let's seal this deal," the GS II packs the same boatload of specs that made it the undisputed smartphone king of 2011. So, come Valentine's Day, you can either give the gift of roses and chocolates or a blush-colored mobile. Or, you can stay at home, drink a bottle of red, watch Love, Actually on repeat, buy one for yourself and pretend you didn't. Go ahead, we won't tell.

Stricken Italian liner shifts, 29 people missing (Reuters)

GIGLIO, Italy (Reuters) ? A stricken Italian cruise liner shifted on its rocky resting place as worsening weather disrupted an increasingly despairing hunt for survivors and authorities almost doubled their estimate of the number missing to 29 people.

As the Costa Concordia's owners accused their captain of veering too close to shore in a bravura "salute" to residents of a Tuscan island, the giant ship slid a little on Monday, threatening to plunge 2,300 tonnes of fuel below the Mediterranean waters of the surrounding nature reserve.

The slippage forced rescuers to suspend efforts to find anyone still alive after three days in the capsized hull, resting on a jagged slope outside the picturesque harbor on the island of Giglio. Six bodies have been found. Most of the 4,200 passengers and crew survived, despite hours of chaos.

Captain Francesco Schettino was arrested a day after the disaster accused of manslaughter and abandoning the ship before all of the people were evacuated. Prosecutors say he also refused to go back on board when requested by the coastguard.

Schettino was due to appear before magistrates for questioning on Tuesday morning.

An Italian coastguard official told Reuters late on Monday that the number of people missing had been revised up to 29 - 25 passengers and four members of staff - from 16, showing how much uncertainty still surrounded the disaster.

Another maritime official said later that 10 Germans were thought to be among the missing passengers.

The 114,500-tonne ship, one of the biggest passenger vessels ever to be wrecked, foundered after striking a rock just as dinner was being served on Friday night. It quickly rolled on its side, revealing a long gouge below the waterline.

Firefighters' spokesman Luca Cari said there were still small movements of the vessel but they were not considered dangerous. However, searches were suspended overnight and would resume at daybreak.

Another senior firefighter, Luciano Roncalli, told Reuters that all the unsubmerged areas of the liner had been searched, indicating faint hopes of finding more survivors in the flooded and upturned maze of luxurious state rooms and tennis courts, bars and spas that are now submerged beneath the sea.

Environment Minister Corrado Clini said he would declare a state of emergency because of the risk that the ship's fuel would leak into the pristine Tuscan Archipelago National Park. No fuel spillage has been detected so far, he said on an Italian television show due to air on Monday evening.

Should rougher seas dislodge the wreck and cause it to sink or break up, that could scupper any hopes for the owners, a unit of Florida's Carnival Corp., of salvaging a liner which cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build just six years ago.

"SALUTE" TO SHORE

Investigators say the ship was far too close to the shore and its owners, Costa Cruises, said the captain had carried out the rash maneuver to "make a bow" to people on Giglio island, who included a retired Italian admiral.

Schettino denies charges of manslaughter.

His lawyer issued a statement saying the skipper was "broken-up, troubled and saddened by the loss of life." But he believed he had saved many lives by carrying out a difficult emergency maneuver with anchors after the accident, which turned the ship closer to the shore.

The father of the ship's head waiter told Reuters that his son had telephoned him before the accident to say the crew would salute him by blowing the ship's whistle as they passed close by Giglio, where both the waiter, Antonello Tievoli, and his 82-year-old father Giuseppe live.

Costa Cruises chief executive Pier Luigi Foschi on Monday blamed errors by Schettino for the disaster. He told a news conference the company would provide its captain with any assistance he required. "But we need to acknowledge the facts and we cannot deny human error," he added.

Foschi said company vessels were forbidden to come closer than 500 meters to the Giglio coast. Investigators say the liner, designed as a floating pleasure palace for over 3,000 paying customers, was about 150 meters (yards) offshore when it hit the rocks that tore a long gash in its thousand-foot hull.

Schettino denies being too close to the coast and says the rock he hit was not marked on charts.

The calm weather which since Friday has aided the search of the wreck, by some estimates the biggest passenger vessel ever to founder, took a turn for the worse on Monday with rougher seas and a light drizzle falling. Forecasters said it would get worse.

The ship is resting in about 20 meters (60 feet) of water but could go down by up to 130 meters if it becomes detached from the rocks.

Carnival Corp, the ship's Miami-based parent company, said it estimated the impact on its 2012 earnings for loss of use alone to be around $90 million. Its share price closed down around 16 percent on the London market.

LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (240GB SSD)

Thunderbolt drives like the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (240GB SSD) are a rare breed at the moment. And, because of their high prices (the LaCie costs costs $899.99 list), you have to have a profitable, billable project like a six-month graphics production contract to make it worth the extra money over a FireWire 800 drive. The Little Big Disk is the "saner" alternative to the Promise Pegasus R6 ($1,999 list, 3.5 stars) line of hard drives, though in the end you're still going to pay a lot of money for a little storage. There are good reasons to get the LaCie Thunderbolt drive instead of more commonplace spinning hard drives, but even so it's strictly for professionals.

Design and Features
The Little Big Disk (LBD) Thunderbolt looks identical to its predecessor, the LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra ($450 list, 3.5 stars), from its all-aluminum construction to its compact 1.6-by-3.3-by-5.5-inch (HWD) chassis to the LaCie-brand-ID blue-LED-lit hemisphere embedded in the drive's front face. The LBD has the same ribs extending down the sides of the case to aid cooling. It's a nice bit of industrial design, but the single fan will still make its presence known with a constant droning whine. On the back is a pair of Thunderbolt ports, which can be connected directly to your Mac, an Apple Thunderbolt Display, or daisy-chained to another drive like a second or third LBD or Promise Pegasus R6 (the only other Thunderbolt drive model on the market so far). Like the Pegasus R6, the LBD comes in a few capacities: 2TB (5,400rpm), 1TB (7,200rpm), and 240GB (SSD) (our review unit, the fastest and most expensive). The chassis houses two 120GB 2.5-inch solid-state drives (SSDs) in a SATA RAID array, allowing more potential bandwidth than you'd get from a single SSD or spinning hard drive. LaCie claims that chaining together four or more LBD drives will get you up to 800MBps throughput.

The drive also comes with an AC power adapter, a screw-on desk stand, and a utility CD that contains the drive's manuals and a full copy of Intego Backup Manager Pro, which gives Mac owners more control over data backup and restoration than Time Machine does. The drive works perfectly well with Time Machine, and is formatted for the Mac-native HFS+ file system out of the box. The drive comes with a three-year limited warranty, which is better than the one-year standard warranty that comes with more pedestrian drives. One thing missing is a Thunderbolt cable: Thus far the $49 Apple Thunderbolt cable is the only one on the market, and you'll need at least two if you want to daisy chain your LBD Thunderbolt drives together.

Performance
Performance is the reason why you'd buy the Little Big Disk over, say a $50 Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB 2.0 drive. The LBD took only 11 seconds to transfer our standard 1.22GB test folder to the drive via Thunderbolt; the same task took 22 seconds via FireWire 800 and 35 seconds via USB 2.0 with our latest Mac Storage Editors' Choice, the Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition ($199.99 list, 4 stars). The speed demon Promise Pegasus R6 needed only 6 seconds, but that's with a six-bay hard drive array, and of course it costs more than twice what the LaCie drive does. Because we can't run Futuremark PCMark 7 on a Mac without emulation, we used AJA's System Test to check out each drive's performance, and the LBD was fast: 476MBps read and 252MBps write. The Promise was significantly faster on write operations (480MBps read, 620MBps write on Thunderbolt) and the eGo BlackBelt was a lot slower (46MBps read, 48MBps write on FireWire 800). Essentially, the LaCie slots in nicely as the "entry-level" drive for Thunderbolt, for those who need more speed than the older FireWire 800 standard can provide.

The LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (240GB SSD) is kind of in its own category these days. It's a fast two-drive non-upgradeable external, which is a lot more pedestrian than the ?ber-drive Promise R6 RAID array. The Promise is the scratch disk you want if you're into HD video production on the Mac in a studio. The Little Big Disk is better suited for people who spend all their time in Photoshop or doing portable HD Video production, or people who absolutely need to transfer files from one Thunderbolt-equipped Mac to another (when the Macs are too far away to use a Thunderbolt cable). The LBD is a good solution for MacBook Air users, but I'd probably recommend the 1TB or 2TB version as a data drive to supplement that system's relatively small 64-256GB flash drive. As it is, the Little Big Disk is the Thunderbolt drive to buy if you're thinking of spending only a slightly insane amount of money.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Buffalo MiniStation Cobalt USB 3.0 with several other hard drive side by side.

Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 10: Hipmunk update, Call of Duty ELITE, Space Kiwi, Kingdom Rush (Appolicious)

Planning a trip in the new year? Hipmunk can help ? it?s latest update adds finding hotels to its repertoire of travel powers. The app was already great for finding flights, and now it?s great for use when you get to where you?re going, too. Following that is one for the gamers out there: Call of Duty ELITE, an app that ties in with the incredibly popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 video game. In our mobile game offerings, we?ve got Space Kiwi, an arcade game with tilt controls, and Kingdom Rush, an iPad tower defense title with an epic fantasy inspiration and some really tough battles to fight.

Travel app Hipmunk was already a pretty great thing to have on your iPhone or iPad. It?s designed to help you find the travel options to get you where you?re going with the least amount of grief, by checking for the right pricing options, the fewest stop-overs and other criteria. It?s minimalist design also makes it extremely easy to use.

Now Hipmunk has applied what worked really well with finding flights to finding hotels, too. You can search through your destination city for hotels by where they?re located and what they cost, in order to find the best fit for your travel needs. Hipmunk will also show you where all the hotels in an area are located by laying them out on a map, making the decision easy.

The biggest video game franchise on the planet recently got a new feature called Call of Duty ELITE. It allows players of the insanely popular first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to track tons of statistics in the game to help them play better, and to connect with other players through lots of social networking features.

By accessing your free ELITE account through the app, you can see where you get killed most in each of the game?s levels, and where you do the most killing, to help you improve. You?ll see your best weapons, other players? weapon choices, and learn all kinds of new things to make yourself better in multiplayer. You can also interact with other players through groups, clans, messaging and lots more. It?s the entire Call of Duty ELITE service, available on the go.

Space Kiwi (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Cartoony action game Space Kiwi is a bit like lots of other running-type titles in the iTunes App Store. The game has you controlling the titular Space Kiwi as it flies over the landscape, collecting coins and fighting enemies along the way. Tilt controls get you around obstacles and keep you collecting what you need, while you?ll need to be quick on the draw to shoot down things the Kiwi can crash into and stop his flight.

Space Kiwi packs 60 levels to play through, with arcade-style difficulty that ramps up to keep providing lots of challenge. It also packs a cool, cartoonish art style and lots of enemies to fight off along the way.

Kingdom Rush joins the App Store?s tower defense offerings with a cartoony, epic fantasy-inspired style and lots of strategy to go around. Like other tower defense titles, the game is all about setting up defenses to take out enemies before they can get into your base.

The game is packed with challenge, dishing out various different tower types that all have different upgrades and abilities to use in your strategies. There are also some 30 different types of enemies that will test your battle acumen and 50 achievements to earn to really stretch your skills.
