T-Mobile buys wireless spectrum from U.S. Cellular for $308 million

Impertinent. Mumbling. Offended. Teary-eyed. Rachel Jeantel, star witness for the prosecution in George Zimmerman's murder trial, was all of those, and more, as her testimony Wednesday provided new details into Trayvon Martin?s last moments and infused racially loaded commentary into an already-sensitive trial.

Language intervention levels playing field for English language learners

June 25, 2013 ? A new approach to teaching pre-kindergarten could take a bite out of the achievement gap and level the playing field for America's growing population of English language learners, according to a recently published study by researchers at Vanderbilt's Peabody College of education and human development.

"We are excited that we have helped teachers develop ways of teaching that result in such remarkable gains among children," David K. Dickinson, professor of education and one of the project's leaders, said. "Our teachers are committed to continuing using the approaches that are working, which means that many more children will benefit from being in their classrooms."

The Enhanced Language and Literacy Success Project, a four-year intervention and research effort performed in collaboration with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, proved that a language-rich pre-K curriculum paired with coaching, feedback and professional development for teachers, can improve student outcomes significantly.

An article about the research was recently published by the journal Early Childhood Research Quarterly.

"Research shows that children from low income families are behind when they start kindergarten and it's really difficult for them to catch up," said Sandra Jo Wilson, associate director of the Peabody Research Institute.

Wilson, one of the project leaders, managed the analysis of data for the study.

"Our study demonstrates that it is possible for children from diverse languages and backgrounds to enter kindergarten with literacy skills at or near national norms," she said.

The researchers evaluated the outcomes of 700 students and 13 teachers in seven Nashville pre-K programs. About half of the students were English language learners and nearly all came from low-income households.

"The element of providing feedback to teachers turned out to be a key to the curriculum's success," Dickinson said. Dickinson co-authored the curriculum, helped guide the delivery of the intervention and did some of the teacher professional development. "Teachers were asking for their reports and wanted to see how they were doing -- they were very responsive to what the coaches had to say."

Deborah Wells Rowe, associate professor of education at Peabody and an expert on early childhood writing, worked with the teachers to incorporate writing into their lessons.

The Enhanced Language and Literacy Success Project is supported by U.S. Department of Education grant No. S359B080078.

Russia: U.S. claims of Syrian chemical arms use unconvincing

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Information that the United States has given Russia about suspected use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces "does not look convincing", President Vladimir Putin's senior foreign policy adviser said on Friday.

Yuri Ushakov said expanded U.S. military support for Assad's opponents would undermine joint efforts to organize a peace conference, but added that Moscow was "not yet" considering sending Assad advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems in response.

A U.S. official said on Thursday that President Barack Obama had authorized sending U.S. weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, after the White House said it had proof that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against opposition forces.

U.S. officials briefed Russia on the information they had, Ushakov said at a briefing before Putin's trip to Northern Ireland for a G8 summit. "But I will say frankly that what was presented to us by the Americans does not look convincing."

"It would be hard even to call them facts," said Ushakov, speaking at a briefing before a summit where Putin will meet Obama and other Western leaders.

"If the Americans ... carry out more wide-scale aid to the rebels and opposition, it will not make organizing the international conference easier," he said.

But he said Russia was not "competing" with the United States over Syria. Asked whether Moscow would send Assad the S-300 missile systems that Israel and the West have urged it not to deliver, he said: "We are not talking about that yet."

Russia and the United States are trying to bring Syria's government and rebels together for talks, but have not secured a commitment from either side to participate.

Cate Blanchett, Connie Nielsen Lend Voices to 'Galapagos Affair' Documentary

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Directors and producers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine have wrapped production on "The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden," a murder mystery documentary that features the voices of international stars such as Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, Connie Nielsen, Josh Radnor, Sebastian Koch, Thomas Kretschmann and Gustaf Skarsgard.

Described as an unusual tale of idealistic dreams gone awry set in the brutal yet alluring landscape of the Galapagos Islands, the project interweaves an unsolved 1930s murder mystery with stories of present-day Galapagos pioneers. The then-and-now portrait becomes a parable of the search for paradise.

The settlers' ongoing drama became regular fodder for tabloids all over the world from 1929-1934. Extensive archival footage, including nearly five years of ?home movies,' was discovered to tell the story of what happened when a few individualists settled on the same small island seeking their own distinct and sometimes clashing notions of Eden.

For over 20 years, Geller and Goldfine have created critically-acclaimed multi-character documentary narratives such as PBS' recent Silicon Valley movie "Something Ventured" and the award-winning international box office hit "Ballets Russes," both of which were distributed by Zeitgeist Films.

Four-time Emmy winner Laura Karpman composed the score for "The Galapagos Affair," which was executive produced by Jonathan Dana, who is also handling worldwide sales.

The documentary is currently in post-production and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
