As the dust around Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr begins to settle, more details are emerging on how the former will enhance the latter's advertising offerings.

Ads on Tumblr could be served from an ad exchange, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer told investors yesterday. Ad Age said, in two different reports:

Yahoo is also considering selling premium ads on Tumblr and to sell ad inventory through exchanges. How premium ads will appear or what exchanges may be used, Ms. Mayer did not say.

Ad exchanges work by offering inventory ? in this case space on Tumblr ? to bidders in an auction. The highest bidder wins the spot. The inventory is triggered when a user carrying a tracking "cookie" in their web browser calls up a page.

The cookies are the key, as AdExchanger pointed out: Tumblr potentially offers a vast, logged-in audience of 225 million unique users a month. If Tumblr allows its login or cookie to be matched with cookies that users bring from other websites, that would offer a target-rich environment for advertisers.

For example, a user shopping for shoes might look at several shoe websites, and pick up cookies from all of them. Then she might check in to her Tumblr account, at which point the shoe cookies could be matched with the Tumblr login cookies and offered for bid. The user might start to see shoe ads inside Tumblr.

A Tumblr ad exchange might work a lot like Facebook's own exchange, FBX, which has been a huge success.

It's an easy way for a large media company like Tumblr to plug in a huge flow of ad dollars.

Tumblr appears to need the money. We previously noted that Tumblr made only $13 million in revenue last year. Now even that number has been called into doubt ? it was more like $5 million. That's a negligible sum from such a large user base.

Tumblr CEO David Karp said yesterday Tumblr was not self-sustaining:

?"There was no path or expectation to sell this company, certainly not this year, and we were well on our way -- I should say, are on our way -- to making this a self-sustaining business with our advertising products," Mr. Karp said in an interview Monday with Ad Age. "The conversation with Yahoo started around their ability to help us accelerate that business."

He was more blunt with Bloomberg:

?We are not cash-flow positive yet, which means we are always running out of money,? he said. ?There was no expectation we were selling the company -- certainly not this year. This was our providence.?

A source told Valleywag Tumblr made only $5 million last year.

If a Tumblr exchange were launched, one key problem would be how to make sure the ads were sufficiently creative to not screw up Tumblr's artsy environment.

The nature of an exchange is simply that the highest bidder wins and is allowed to serve whatever ad they want ? the process is entirely automated. Mayer said she was keen yesterday to ensure that the ads should be "something people take delight in."

Mayer hinted they may have a way to solve that dilemma: by only allowing ads on users' individual pages with their permission:

Ms. Mayer also said ads will eventually appear on individual Tumblr sites, though only "with the blogger's permission." She declined to comment on how that would be set up and whether it might entail revenue-sharing agreements.

Put those two notions together ? an ad exchange with inventory based only on users who opt-in ? and that could be a powerful permission-based ad system. Generally, advertisers far prefer targeting users who have given permission to be targeted than simply serving ads at cookies.

Toronto mayor urged to step down if crack allegations true

TORONTO (Reuters) - The mayor of Canada's largest city, facing allegations that he smoked crack cocaine, and made racial and homophobic slurs on video, must either refute the accusations or step down, fellow city politicians say.

"If the allegations are false, then the mayor is owed some apologies," said Councillor Josh Matlow, who has clashed with Ford on transit issues, but who usually takes a centrist line in a polarized city council.

"If the allegations are proven true beyond a reasonable doubt, then the mayor should resign."

An editor from U.S. media outlet Gawker and two reporters from the Toronto Star said separately they saw a cellphone video that appeared to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine.

Ford, who is no stranger to controversy, was elected mayor of Toronto more than two years ago after serving as a councillor for 10 years. He called the allegations "ridiculous" on Friday and suggested they were part of a broader campaign against him by the left-leaning Toronto Star newspaper.

Dennis Morris, Ford's lawyer, told Reuters on Monday that it was still too early to consider legal action over the allegations and that if there is a video, it needs to be made public so that Canadians can judge the content for themselves.

"We're all waiting to see whether there's anything within this video and whether or not it's been doctored, edited, altered, that type of thing," he said.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the existence of the video or its contents.

Ford's brother, Doug, his closest ally on City Council, broke a brief and uncharacteristic silence on Saturday, telling local radio station Newstalk 1010, "I have never seen my brother involved with anything like coke."

The brothers canceled their regular Sunday appearance on a radio show at the same station.

The controversy made headlines across Canada and around the world, although some focused as much on Ford's crude remarks as the allegations of crack use.

"The allegations that have been leveled at Mayor Ford are not just serious, but they are also criminal," Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam told CBC News. "I would encourage the mayor to resign and to seek help as soon as possible should this be true."

The Toronto Star reporters who watched the video said Ford calls Liberal leader Justin Trudeau a "fag" and derisively refers to players on the high school football team he coaches as "minorities".

"If the mayor the of world's most diverse city is proven to have uttered racial and homophobic slurs, then he's not fit for the office," Councillor Matlow told Reuters.

Toronto City Council contains both left-leaning councilors, mostly from the city's core, and right-leaning candidates like Ford, who are mostly from suburban areas like Etobicoke.

The two groups tend to take different approaches on issues from transit to unionized labor, with often comical policy flip flops. In one example, City Council imposed a 5-cent fee on plastic grocery bags, then ignored Ford's plea to remove the fee and voted to ban the bags completely.

They then reversed that decision, leaving the issue exactly where it was before the whole debate started.

Elected on a platform to stop the gravy train at City Hall, Ford has courted controversy on many occasions; the Toronto Star on Friday published a list of 42 "extraordinary moments" in his political career.

The list includes accusations that Ford skipped City Council meetings to coach high-school football and engaged in a confrontation outside his home with a reporter.

He was briefly ordered out of office in 2012 after he was found guilty of conflict of interest, but won an appeal and was allowed to finish his four-year term as mayor.

In 2008, assault charges brought against Ford by his wife Renata were withdrawn by the Crown because of inconsistencies in Renata's story. The couple later reconciled.

The rumblings of scandal have eroded Ford's popularity, although polls conducted before the reports of the video still enjoyed support from some 50 percent of the population, most of them from in Toronto's suburbs.

Both Gawker and the Star say the video is being shopped around by people with connections to the drug trade.

In an effort buy the video and post it online, Gawker launched a "Crackstarter" campaign last week to raise $200,000. It has so far raised more than $76,000.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Cricket hero Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf party won a revote in an upmarket constituency of Karachi on Sunday, unofficial results showed, a day after gunmen killed a party leader, setting the stage for protests and counter-protests.

Last week's election gave the MQM 18 of 19 national assembly seats in Karachi. Now the PTI has one seat, according to unofficial results.

Both the MQM, angry at the accusations, and the PTI have called for protests on Monday which often turn violent in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city. Karachi generates around half of the government's revenue and stability in the city is key to stability of the whole country.

Police said that two gunmen shot Hussain on Saturday outside her home in Defense.

"I hold (MQM leader) Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts," Khan, recovering in hospital from a fall during campaigning, said in a tweet.

"I also hold the British government responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats."

Altaf Hussain is accused of murder in Pakistan and leads his party remotely from exile in England. His party is designated a terrorist organization by Canada, a charge it strongly denies.

In recent days, he gave a speech which many Pakistanis felt was an incitement to attack political rivals. British police are investigating whether or not it constituted a hate speech.

Karachi, the nuclear-armed country's key port, is home to 18 million people. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a combination of political killings, attacks by the Pakistan Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime.

Former O.J. Simpson attorney refutes testimony

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? The lawyer who defended O.J. Simpson on armed robbery charges delivered a potentially heavy blow to the former football star's bid for a new trial Friday, testifying that Simpson knew his buddies had guns on them when he went to a hotel room to reclaim some sports memorabilia.

Miami attorney Yale Galanter took the stand in a frequently combative hearing over Simpson's claim that he was so badly represented by Galanter that his conviction should be thrown out. Point by point, Galanter contradicted much of own former client's testimony and defended his handling of the case.

Galanter said Simpson confided to him that he had asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room confrontation with two memorabilia dealers in 2007 and "he knew he screwed up."

The attorney denied giving Simpson the go-ahead to try to retrieve the items, which included photos and signed footballs that Simpson believed had been stolen from him. He said he advised Simpson not to take matters into his own hands.

And Galanter disputed Simpson's claim that Galanter never told him about plea bargain discussions with prosecutors that could have resulted in a prison sentence of just a few years.

Simpson, 65, was convicted in 2008 of kidnapping and armed robbery over the hotel room episode and was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison. He and his new lawyers, Patricia Palm and Ozzie Fumo, allege Galanter botched the trial. District Judge Linda Marie Bell has not indicated when she will rule on the request for a new trial.

On the stand, Galanter hesitated and spoke only after he paused, breathed deeply and was reminded that Simpson had waived attorney-client privilege.

"I'm very uncomfortable doing this," Galanter said.

Testifying about events leading up to the hotel room incident, Galanter said he was surprised when Simpson told him over dinner at a Las Vegas hotel that he and several other men were planning a "sting" the next morning to take back items he believed had been stolen from him in Los Angeles.

Galanter said he advised against it.

"When he first mentioned it, it just went over my head," Galanter said of Simpson's plan. "About a minute or two later, I leaned over and said, 'What are you talking about? What are you doing?'

"He told me he finally had a lead on some personal pictures and memorabilia that was stolen from him years earlier," Galanter testified. "I said, 'O.J., you've got to call the police.'"

According to Simpson, Galanter advised the former NFL running back that it was his legal right to retrieve the items; told Simpson not to testify at the trial; and failed to tell Simpson that prosecutors had offered plea bargains. Earlier in the week, Simpson testified that he didn't know anyone in the hotel room had guns.

Another Simpson lawyer, Tom Pitaro, insistently cross-examined Galanter closely about financial aspects of the case. During one objection, the judge asked Pitaro where he was going with his questions.

"What Mr. Galanter has done is, this man has received over a half-million dollars and has put his interest, his financial interest, above the interest of his client," Pitaro said.

Galanter insisted he told Simpson at least three times that prosecutors discussed plea bargains with him. But he said Simpson rejected them.

Simpson said, "No deal. No way" to an offer from the district attorney of five to seven years in prison, Galanter said. Later, during the trial, Simpson turned down an even better offer, Galanter said.

"I went out in the hall and said to O.J, 'There is an offer of two to five.' He said, 'See if they will take a year,'" Galanter testified. "I discussed a year with them, and they said no and the trial went on."

Galanter was also grilled on his trial decisions, such as not objecting to a recording of a discussion that mentioned Simpson's sensational 1995 murder trial, which ended with his acquittal in the slayings of his ex-wife and a friend of her. Galanter noted that the judge at the armed robbery trial had instructed the jury it couldn't consider the murder case.

If Simpson succeeds in getting his armed robbery conviction thrown out, prosecutors will have to either retry him or offer a plea bargain. It is also possible Simpson could be freed with credit for time served. If he loses, he will be sent back to prison and will probably appeal to a higher court. He will be 70 before he is eligible for parole.
